Light the World - Call for Entry

Light is our primary tool for perceiving and understanding the world around us. Without light there is no vision. Light allows us to appreciate the world through shape and form and evokes emotions. Common qualities of light are intensity, quality, color, direction, distribution, texture and movement. Artists are encouraged to explore how light creates and transforms your art.

Waiting (SAQA Virtual Gallery) - Call for Entry

We often think of waiting as a static and passive act. But it is, in fact, an integral and dynamic part of living: from the roil of emotions we feel while waiting for news, to the changes we might make because we simply can't wait any longer. Though our lives are different, we've all waited at one time or another. It is a shared, but personal, experience.

The myriad ways we experience Waiting make it the perfect theme for the debut exhibition of SAQA's Volunteer Curator program for the Virtual Gallery. Member Katherine Wilson is at the helm of the show. She asks, “How does waiting impact your body, mind, and spirit?" and says, "I'm excited and inspired by artists who have a unique voice and point of view." What are the moments in YOUR life, significant or small, that you have waited for? Share your stories with us!  Diverse entries will help Wilson build a compelling new story about Waiting, a fact of life we can all relate to. All types of work may be submitted, including installations and work no longer in your possession.

November 18: Canadian Craft Year 2020: Fiber Artists Nicole Dextras, Mindy Yan Miller & Tina Struthers

Presented by Surface Design Association

Join us as we celebrate Canada’s Craft Year 2020 with individual presentations by Nicole Dextras, Mindy Yan Miller & Tina Struthers, three artists reflecting some of the rich heritage of fiber and textile art in Canada. The award winning art practice of Nicole Dextras is rooted in the environmental art movement, where our fragile existence is presented through transformative installations and videos that mark the nature of time. Mindy Yan Miller often works with large masses of found or ready-made materials including used clothing, human hair, coke cans and most recently cowhide. Tina Struthers’ work engages themes such as multiculturalism and multiethnic society, specializing in combining fiber and textile elements, with a focus on detailed surface texture and hand stitched quality. This presentation is sponsored by Surface Design Association (SDA) and is moderated by SDA President Astrid Bennett.
