Dear JL Boston Community and Friends,

We are grateful for the connections we make with the community. Together, we are catalysts for lasting community change. In Junior League of Boston’s Strategic Plan to grow 30%, impact 30% more, and give 30% more, we are happy to say that our new member class is the largest it has been in years. This enables us to further support our vision that every girl has the skills and confidence to thrive at life

Our STEM program, engaging middle school age girls in science, technology, engineering, and math, is off to a strong start. Girls exercised hands-on problem solving skills through simulations, and learned about opportunities through tours of various tech facilities and career speakers.
To bring awareness to homelessness in Boston, JL Boston collaborated with ArtLifting to display artwork in our Newbury Street HQ by local women artists affected by homelessness. We hosted a Luncheon with artist, Kitty Zen, who shared her story and inspiration through appreciating Boston through various perspectives.

The Diversity and Inclusion Task Force kicked off with strong representation across our organization.  Sub committees focusing on Leadership/ Membership, Community, and Trainings are underway, developing strategies and key performance indicators to bring our Diversity and Inclusion Commitment to life.

JL Boston continues long standing programs: Leader Within, JL Boston Arts, Kids in the Kitchen, Learning Circles, Run Club, and Amiga Mentoring Program.  When we asked the girls what they gained from the grocery program in JL Boston Arts, 75% of the girls answered either that they discovered new foods or that they learned to cook healthy meals.  When girls in our programs were asked “how comfortable do you feel sharing your opinion about something?” On average the girls scored 3.8 out of 4, after our program.
JL Boston offered numerous trainings this Fall, including Positively engaging with adolescent girls, Working Together to End Trafficking, Personal Branding, Leadership, and Salary Negotiation. We ask for your support to continue serving the Boston community through our girl mentoring program, developing Boston women leaders and promoting voluntarism. Please join me in giving:

With gratitude,
Pamela Lynch
JL Boston President 2016-2017

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is one of the fastest growing segments of the U.S. economy. Between 2014 and 2024, the demand for STEM jobs will increase 17 percent, as compared to 12 percent for non-STEM jobs. However, educating our youth in the STEM fields is facing many obstacles. The new JL Boston STEM program, launched in fall 2016 and serving girls in Dorchester and East Boston, aims to create an environment where girls are encouraged to expand their interest and ability in STEM through fun and educational activities, as well as to foster excitement for girls to pursue STEM as a career path.

Over the last 110 years, the Junior League of Boston has been a strong supporter of the needs of the greater Boston Metro community, from making clothing and supplies for Union soldiers to developing projects such as the Good Grief Program and the Women’s Informational Referral and Education Service to address social issues in the community.

As we begin another cold winter here in Boston, many of us will take for granted the warm homes we return to each night, but not everyone in our community is so lucky; there are approximately 4,000 homeless youth in the Boston public school system alone. In a bid to further our impact on the local homeless community, JL Boston teamed up with ArtLifting, a social enterprise and benefit corporation that empower artists living with homelessness or disabilities through the celebration and sale of their artwork.

Many Junior Leagues, in the form of a State Public Affairs Committee (SPACs), have been advocating for a policy change that addresses the root cause of a problem for years. The purpose of SPAC is to take action on select state and national issues that support the Leagues’ projects, mission and focus areas. In order to further the impact of its work the Junior League of Boston has recently launched the Public Awareness Committee which aims to establish a framework to provide members the training they need to conduct advocacy with skill on behalf of our community partners, our focus issues and our mission, and to connect Junior League.
