Dear Friends,

What a wonderful privilege to welcome you to the fall issue of Connections! We are grateful to the Director of Communications Jennifer Dorman and the entire Connections team for their hard work on this publication.

Fall is a great season of optimism and renewal! New England residents have the special joy of seeing our beautiful leaves change and enjoying gorgeous walks in our neighborhoods and woodlands.

Thanks to you, the Junior League of Boston is growing. Membership is up nearly 10%, which in turn has allowed us to expand our Community Service Programs. JL Boston serves hundreds of girls in greater Boston, through weekday and Saturday programming. Your generosity has allowed us to add a new Community Program this year, in collaboration with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts. We are delighted with the synergies that our two organizations enjoy.

This fall issue of Connections highlights our Community Service Programs and related and planned activities. We have a demonstrated history of successfully identifying community needs, developing strategic solutions and community partnerships to address the needs, and mobilizing our trained volunteers to serve. As members, community partners, and friends of The Junior League of Boston, we are boldly transforming our community and ourselves through service and leadership.

Sincerely,

JL Boston Gives First Community Assistance Grant of 2015-2016

Chairs, Strong Women Strong Girls

The first Community Assistance Grant of this JL Boston year was given to our Community Program Collaborator Strong Women Strong Girls (SWSG) in the amount of $1,400. We enter our fourth year of partnership with SWSG with a team of 15 JL Boston members dedicated to mentoring college women who in turn directly serve at-risk pre-adolescent girls in under served local communities. JL Boston’s collaboration with SWSG elevates our member-leaders, college age women, and the girls directly served through providing cross-generational engagement and service as a lasting value. Congratulations to SWSG!

The Junior League of Boston thanks Medtronic, our first grant provider of the year. Two JL Boston members, Leigh Anne Dempsey, Director of Nominating, and Marisa Saladino, member of the Board Seat Initiative committee, are senior level employees of Medtronic and generously applied for and received the Medtronic grant. This grant is available to employees who provide substantial volunteer service to regional non-profits and goes directly to the non-profit named by the employee. Thank you to Medtronic and to Leigh Anne Dempsey and Marisa Saladino for achieving these grants for JL Boston’s Community Service and Training Fund.

Catalysts for Lasting Community Impact: Advocating for the Wellness of Girls in Boston

Pamela Lynch
President-Elect 2015-2016

JL Boston’s direct community service work in the greater Boston community helps girls in the areas of positive development, empowerment, leadership skills, health and wellness, and over the past decade our direct and indirect service has reached thousands of vulnerable pre-teen and teenage girls. Advocacy is the third pillar of service, and a great way for us to give a voice to the disenfranchised girls who are unable to speak for themselves.

JL Boston’s signature projects including Leader Within, Learning Circles and JL Boston Arts―which have curricula developed, refined, and led by members―are only one piece of the sustainable solution for lasting community impact. We focus on serving girls who live in under-served neighborhoods and are faced with challenges of self-esteem issues, gender inequality and childhood obesity at the pivotal age of 9-13 years old. 80% of the girls we serve qualify for free lunch. We act as the girls’ advocates to the schools, other organizations and in the community.

The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) strongly supports public affairs and advocacy work as part of the full picture solution. As we develop our identity in the area of current Boston public affairs, we will advocate for the wellness of girls in the specific areas of:
  • Reversing childhood obesity
  • Empowering girls
  • Developing leaders
Through our renewed advocacy efforts, we will truly advance our focus of developing tomorrow’s healthy, confident women leaders.

Advocacy Works!

A few examples of powerful acts of public awareness that align with JL Boston's focus areas.

Stereotypes: Feminine product company Always triggered a viral social media campaign #LikeAGirl bringing awareness to the fact that 72% of girls feel society limits them — especially during puberty — a time when their confidence totally plummets.  The campaign empowers girls to be unstoppable and raises awareness on the issue of girls being influenced by society’s stereotypes.

Sex Trafficking: Last year the documentary “A Path Appears” was released, highlighting gender inequality and the issues of sex trafficking in Boston and neighboring areas. In 2014 an estimated 1 out of 6 endangered runaways reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children they were likely child sex trafficking victims. Of those, 68% were in the care of social services or foster care when they ran. 55% of the girls JL Boston serves come from single parent homes or are in the social services system.

Childhood Obesity: In 2012, the documentary "Weight of the Nation" also highlighted Boston and the work organizations are doing to reverse the epidemic of childhood obesity.
