Online Christiaan Huygens lecture
on April 14, 2021 at 8:00 PM
Hugh Aldersey-Williams

It is a good tradition that a lecture is organized on the birthday of Christiaan Huygens, April 14, 1629, both at Huygens' Hofwijck and by the Haegsche Tijd Foundation in the Venduehuis. This year, these two organizations are joining forces to provide an online lecture by Hugh Aldersey-Williams. Subject is his recently published and critically acclaimed biography of Christiaan Huygens, Dutch Light; Christiaan Huygens and the making of science in Europe.
It is not often that almost all national newspapers devote full-page reviews to a biography of a scientist.
That was the case with Dutch Light, translated into Dutch as A century of light; The life of Christiaan Huygens. The reviewers were unanimous in their praise. There was appreciation for the nuanced picture that Aldersey-Williams paints of Christiaan, for his flexible writing style and, last but not least, for the way in which he compares Huygens with that other great physicist and contemporary, Isaac Newton. The fact that Dutch Light is intended as a reappraisal of Christian's international status among a wide audience, with the statement that he was at least as important as a scientist as his nowadays much more famous English colleague, will please many International enthusiasts.

Best Wishes
