Get ready for the President's Speaker Series!

The Sixth Extinction

by Elizabeth Kolbert

Author Elizabeth Kolbert will be speaking at the President's Speaker Series in February. Her Pulitizer Prize winning The Sixth Extinction is available in print in the Library. Over the last half billion years, there have been five major mass extinctions, when the diversity of life on Earth suddenly and dramatically contracted. Scientists are currently monitoring the sixth extinction, predicted to be the most devastating since the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs. This time around the cataclysm is us. In this book Kolbert tells us why and how human beings have altered life on the planet in a way no species has before. She provides a moving account of the disappearances of various species occurring all around us and traces the evolution of extinction as concept, from its first articulation by Georges Cuvier in revolutionary Paris up to Lyell and Darwin, and through the present day. The sixth extinction is likely to be mankind's most lasting legacy, compelling us to rethink the fundamental question of what it means to be human. (Publisher Description)

Did you know past recordings and resources from the President Speaker Series are on reserve in the Library? Take a walk down memory lane or discover some of the amazing speaker's who have presented in this series with our President's Speaker Series historical archive website. Assistant Librarian Meredith Bishop compiled scans of most of the event posters and links to speakers' books on reserve on this nifty site. The series began in 1998. Did you know that Kellyanne Conway (yes, that one) was scheduled to speak in 2004?
