NAMAQUA NATIONAL PARK  -  NORTHERN CAPE

Hi all

The fields and mountains are still looking very pretty with water running down everywhere and some of the rivers still have some water in.  The sun is shining and it is very warm and windy with temperatures reaching up to 33 degrees these last three days. In the morning the temperature is still anything from 2 degrees to 17 and on the mornings that the temperatures are so cold the flowers only open fully round about lunch time.  The fields are not totally covered yet with the big display of flowers.  Where with the last report it was mainly Gousblom, a couple of other species has started to bloom. At Skilpad you will mainly see different species of Gousblom and Pietsnot. The following flowers are also starting to bloom: T’neitjie, Sporrie, Varkiesknol, Vygiebos, Bokbaaivygie, Sandvygie, Sterretjie, Botterblom, Bittergousblom, Perdebos, Dassiegousblom, Namaqua daisy.

The coastal area in the park (Groen river to Spoeg river) doesn’t have a lot of flowers as yet. Most of the flowers are between the Bitter River and south of Kwass as well as at Skuinsbaai Noord.  Visitors must enter the coastal area from north to south to view flowers at its best. Currently there are a variety of vygies like the Koper vygie, Volstruis vygie, Vygie bos and Skaapbos. Please note that the coastal section of Namaqua NP can only be visited with a 4x4.

The Caracal Ecoroute in Namaqua National Park have a variety of flowers in the inland area especially from the turnoff to the route till sign number 7.  It is essential to buy the guide booklet at one of our offices if you intend doing this route. The route takes all day and a 4x4 is essential due to some sandy stretches along the coast.

Rainfall at Skilpad:
April 2016:                                     45.98mm
May 2016:                                       5.58mm
June 2016:                            36.56mm
July 2016:                            143.40mm
August 2016 (to date)            12.69mm

Visitors must please note that the ground is very soft and muddy at this stage, so please do not drive on non-designated roads or off existing roads since you will get stuck.  Also note that the Wildeperdehoek Pass is still in a bad condition.  We advise visitors to please drive slowly and careful on all gravel roads in Namaqua and not only in the park.  We will keep you updated on the road conditions.

Please feel free to send information about where to see flowers and pictures to me if you want me to include it in our report.  If you know of anybody else that should also get this update, please let me know.

It should be noted that it is very difficult to predict with certainty what the flowers would be like and that we can only guess based on current weather conditions.

VIEWING TIPS
Tips while viewing flowers

•    The flowers are open between 11:00 and 15:00, the warmest part of the day
•    The sun must be out for flowers to open, thus rainy or overcast days are not ideal
•    The day temperature must be at least 18 degrees
•    Flowers face the sun, thus for viewing and pictures keep your back to the sun

•    Get out of the car and walk around, don't miss the special smaller species
•    Tread lightly, don't unnecessarily trample plants, and never pick flowers or bulbs

What to wear when viewing flowers

•    Long pants and insect repellent when walking around in the field
•    Comfortable shoes

Advice to tourists

•    Try to book your accommodation in advance
•    The West Coast Flower Hotline is available from 08:00 to 20:00, 7 days a week
•    Most towns along the flower routes have fuel stations, ATMs and mobile reception
•    The further north, the further apart the towns, keep in mind when planning
•    Stop and ask locals for advice on flower hot spots, distances, etc - they're friendly
•    Namakwa/West Coast flower maps are available at all tourism information offices
