Hello <<First Name>>!

How are you? How was your summer?

We had a good summer - visits with siblings/cousins on isolated islands in the Pacific Ocean, met up with kids and grand-kids, welcomed two new babies into the family and swam (including some wonderful swims in the lakes and the ocean!),Ted's dear Aunt Mary died which provided us the opportunity to gather with his cousins who he has not seen in decades and honour this wonderful woman. Then at the end of the summer, I returned to Arbutus Island and the trees that inspired the art for our books and the logo for our business.

WE HAVE BIG NEWS! We are deeeeelighted to announce that the text for nurses, Essentials in Hospice and Palliative Care: A Practical Resource for Every Nurse is at the printer and is READY to be ordered! I wrote a blog post about the adventure of writing it which you can read here.

This fall we are excited to attend some wonderful conferences and meet up with dear and esteemed colleagues. We leave Sept 28th to attend the first Palliative Care Education and Research Conference sponsored by Cal State University. The theme of the conference is "Engaging the Next Generation" resonates with me! I am also excited about attending the CAPNE conference (Canadian Association of Practical Nurse Educators) in Newfoundland, the 21st International Congress in Montreal, and then have the privilege of presenting at the RPNAO conference in Toronto.

Please drop in and see us at the exhibit booths, email me if we are going to be in your neighbourhood (perhaps we can meet for a cuppa something) or email me to update me on what is happening in your life, in your work and in your thoughts. There is much happening in health care right now, and I am eager to know your stories.

Warm regards and wishes for a happy autumn!
- Kath

A Practical Resource for Every Nurse

This book was written specifically for nurses -

This text will help every nurse (YOU) to integrate a palliative approach
into care by incorporating the principles and practices of hospice and palliative care early in the disease process, for people with any life-limiting illness across all care settings.

Essentials Hospice and Palliative Care: A Practical Resource for Every Nurse provides knowledge, skills, and strategies for providing excellent hospice and palliative care.
It is designed to help nurses and nursing students:because in your professional, personal, and community life, you care for dying people and their families.

  • Meet national competencies and learning outcomes related to hospice and palliative care and end-of-life care
  • Enhance best practice interactions
  • Increase confidence and competence in caring for the dying person and family
  • Decrease fears and concerns about caring for the dying person and their family
  • Increase ability to respond to challenging issues
  • Provide excellent care for the dying person and family

In addition, the text includes ethical touchstones and stories addressing cultural issues. It is my hope that this text indeed will help to engage the next generation!

Care Planning Cookies are edible cookies with a message inside, each one intended to stimulate conversations about living well and dying well.
You can order cookies in English, French, Spanish (thanks Maria Salas) and Chinese  (Thanks to Mr and Mrs Chan!).

There are some fun ideas for ways to use the cookies... We met a bar owner recently who is going to distribute them in his bar. His wife, an LPN will be there to listen and report back on that experience. Looking forward to hearing their update!

Are you ready to get the conversation started?
