Jesse Lee Kercheval, a poet, novelist, and Zona Gale Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has translated a wide selection of the luminous, deceptively simple, but deeply philosophical poems of Circe Maia, to make them available in English in the U.S. for the first time.
Uruguayan Circe Maia is one of the few living poets left from a generation that brought Latin American writing to world prominence. Maia was awarded the inaugural Delmira Agustini Medal of Art and Culture by Uruguayan President Jóse Mujica in 2013.
Poems from this selection have appeared in TheNew Yorker, American Poetry Review, Boston Review, and World Literature Today.
