Wadding - it’s the bit you don’t see, but your choice of wadding for your patchwork project can have a big impact on how it finally looks when quilted and then as it is washed over time.
When you have spent hours selecting the fabrics and weeks (or months.. maybe years..) constructing the quilt, it only seems right that you should take the time to ensure you have the perfect wadding for your project.
Historically, quilters used whatever was on hand to fill their quilts, from loose cotton and wool rovings to torn newspaper and pine needles (ouch!).
The selection of wadding available now is so extensive it can be a bit daunting; as one of the largest retailers of wadding in the UK stocking a wide range of brands in all different sizes, colours and materials, we know this only too well!
We have some very informative blog posts to help you make the right choice for your project.
However, there is no real substitute for actually seeing and feeling the differences before making your decision so we produce wadding sample packs that are very popular, especially with patchworkers who are new to the craft.
The Wadding 4" Charm Pack contains a selections of 18 waddings divided into two sections, “natural” and “man-made”, with a cover sheet for each section giving a brief description of each type.
If you want more reassurance that what you put in the middle is a worthy choice then the sample pieces in our Wadding Sample Packs are much larger at approximately 35cm (14") square - big enough to sandwich between two pieces of fabric so that you can practise your quilting with your chosen thread to ensure you are happy with the result. Choose between Natural or Man-made, with 9 samples in each pack.
If you already know what you want, but are unsure which brand will fit the bill, you may find our Wadding comparison chart useful. Or for an even more detailed look at different wadding, have a read through of our Wadding E-book!
Quilters Dream Green uses a soft, cozy, green polyester fibre made from recycled plastic bottles. Not only does this eco-friendly process help to reduce landfill, it produces a wonderful wadding that is excellent for machine quilting and very good for hand quilting.
It can be washed and dried with little to no shrinkage, it's wrinkle resistant and, although no scrim or resins are used, you can stitch up to 30cm (12") apart (and don't worry about the "natural" light green colour - it's colourfast).
We have expanded our range of Aurifil threads with lots of new colours including many more Variegated threads. There are new colours for 12, 28, 40, 50 and 80 weight and the Aurifloss range. Plus we have new thread packs for Aurifloss such as the Peacock Collection by Sheena Norquay, and the Merry Stitch-Mas pack from Aurifil. Plus we have a new Variegated Thread collection for 50 weight threads.
Talented designer and teacher Angela Attwood has created this Delectably Dashing Churn Dash quilt that is featured in issue 55 of Today’s Quilter. The fabrics are from the William Morris Bloomsbury collection plus coordinating solids. The magazine contains full instructions on how to piece the quilt, but, as is so often the case with quilt projects, there are no tips on how to quilt it.
Angela is also a Westalee accredited teacher and has quilted this beautifully using Westalee quilting templates on her own sewing machine. Generally when demonstrating quilting templates plain fabrics are used because the focus is on the stitches and the quilting design so it is refreshing to see how well the quilting enhances the block design in a “real” quilt.
Angela has produced an instruction leaflet for the quilting design that is available for free with the voucher code DELECTABLYFREE. Even if you don’t intend to make the Churn Dash quilt it is very useful to see how the quilting design is created: planning the design is often the hardest part of machine quilting.
