News for the International House Community

Dear Friend

The start of second semester was celebrated with the third formal dinner for 2016, our Winter Dinner.  This year our entire community joined together for the celebration. For the first time at IH since the opening of the George Hicks Building we had both the undergraduate and graduate community all eating together in the Dimmick Dining Hall. With more than 350 people in the room, IH residents were sitting at tables with an enormous mix of ages, study disciplines, stages of learning and plurality of nationality and culture.

IH mourns with people across the world when tragedies occur. Rather than make political comment we seek learning and debate; we seek to consider issues from many points of view. But we all quietly suffer when humanity suffers, as we are all connected. International House is here to provide a culturally rich environment for people to learn at University as well as learn about themselves and others, to live together in a climate of tolerance and of welcoming diversity. Long may the special philosophy and environment of International House continue.

IHers are citizens of the world, developing skills to constantly adapt to the changing and at times tumultuous world of today. Our College was founded on the belief that people from different nations need to meet and know each other.  At IH people are able to experience others as individuals, as friends, and as classmates going to university together. The philosophy of International House from the day we began over 59 years ago was for students to meet in this collegial community of scholars on an individual basis, to know each other, to understand and welcome difference, to respect each other’s culture and to know people from the world-over.

Congratulations go to IHers for their outstanding Semester 1 results. More than a quarter of all subject results were H1 and close to a half of all results were H1 or H2A. A fabulous testament to our residents’ ability, focus on study and the teaching provided both at university and at IH. We farewelled a number of students at the end of Semester 1 who were heading off for study abroad and some were finishing their degree.
The new semester brought 45 new students into our community, who were welcomed by the Winter O Week leaders.  These new IHers are in good hands and are quickly experiencing what a welcoming environment IH is to live in.

I look forward to having many alumni join us at the Frank Larkins Oration here at IH on Thursday 25 August. Our guest speaker this year is the Hon Tim Fischer AC.  Please feel welcome to invite any friends or colleagues who may be interested in attending the Oration. You will find further information and registration details within this newsletter.
I wish to thank so many of you for your good wishes, cards and gifts for our Deputy Head Mr Peter Cole who had a stroke late last semester. Peter has now come home to IH after a period of time in hospital and at a rehabilitation centre. We are so pleased to see Peter around IH chatting with students and staff as he moves through this period of rehabilitation from home.
We are looking forward to the construction of the Multi-Purpose Study Room and the Project Room which will extend the Library/Resource Centre into the existing car-park area on the ground floor of the Founders Building. This is scheduled to be ready and available for use by the start of Semester 1 2017 - our 60th year! It will be a fine anniversary present for the House and the extra space will be appreciated by our expanded residential community.
To all our IH alumni and friends, thank you for your ongoing interest in International House. Our motto Fraternitas has a contemporary context implying a fellowship of young men and women and recognition of a common humanity across cultural and national boundaries. Long may this continue to underpin the International House philosophy.
