Happy New Year from the VAPAE Team!

Happy New Year 2018
VAPAE had the immense pleasure of wrapping up 2017 by celebrating our Afterschool and Arts Enrichment Programs at Emerson Community Charter Middle School, Coeur d'Alene Avenue Elementary School, St. Sophia's, MASA at UCLA Community School, and the respective Teaching Artists at our first-ever gallery event on December 13, 2017. The gallery was filled with incredible works, and the students were so excited to see their art on gallery walls at UCLA.

Afterschool and Arts Enrichment Programs are launching next week with our familiar sites at Emerson, St. Sophia's, and MASA, and welcome back our Photo Program at Venice High School led by VAPAE minor Rachel Tu and Owen Weitzel. We are excited to join with a new partner, Ad Astra at SpaceX where our two Teaching Artists, Alyssa Scott & Jane Kim will be implementing an entirely unique curriculum while also conducting arts education research.

Week One was a whirlwind! Tuesday, Laurel Butler taught Dance 165: Foundations of Dance Education. Wednesday, Sue Bell Yank taught Arts Education 103: Socially Engaged Pedagogy in the Arts. Thursday, we were excited to welcome back our large cohort of students in Arts Education M192 led by Jessica Bianchi, with an expected 14 school sites to be taught in the spring quarter by our VAPAE students. Onya Hogan-Finlay's cohort is implementing their curricula this winter at 8 school sites in a diverse range of art-making in Arts Education M192SL.

VAPAE is proud to announce that our first-ever full day Professional Development Workshop for our Teaching Artists will take place February 24th. Led by Laurel Butler, VAPAE Teaching Artists and students in the Arts Education Teaching Sequence will be able to hone in on their teaching practices, learn new techniques, and continue in their development.

VAPAE wishes all of our students and community partners a healthy and productive winter quarter, with lots of art in all of our lives!
