November Newsletter + Invitation

VAPAE began October with exciting plans for the Fall Quarter. We are immensely proud of the partnership with Justice Work Group's Beyond the Bars LA: The End of Mass Incarceration conference - where we listened in on brilliant keynote speakers Dr. Melina Abdullah, "Freeway" Rick Ross, Kim Carter, Shaka Senghor, and Danny Murrillo and visited panels where our own students shared their creative work alongside esteemed professors. Our MASA Program at the UCLA Community School celebrated Día de los Muertos with a beautiful altar and paid respect to loved ones passed. The Classroom in Residence at the Hammer (CRH) Professional Development was a success - complete with a presentation of Ethnic Studies by Lorena Guillén and her associates, close looking and manifestos about Isabel Castro's work in Radical Women: Latin American Art, 1960 - 1985 led by Olivia Fales from the Hammer Museum, an ethno-drama workshop led by VAPAE Director Kevin Kane, and an Unjust Art Project led by teaching artist Marissa Magdalena-Sykes.

Our Arts Education Teaching Sequence courses are in full swing this fall quarter with lecturer Jessica Bianchi leading our M102 students into crafting unique lessons and lecturer Onya Hogan-Finlay wrapping up micro-teaching lessons to prepare for teaching in the classroom next quarter. Our fantastic videographer Tigran Nersisian is in the midst of creating short documentaries about our Afterschool Programs, beginning with Emerson Community Charter Middle School. Be on the lookout for digital narratives about MASA, St. Sophia's, and more on our websiteFacebook, and Tumblr.

And to conclude our update is an invite to all of you.

Please save the date, December 13, 2017 4pm - 6pm for Arts through Community: A Celebration of VAPAE's Afterschool Arts Programs - a UCLA campus gallery event to highlight artwork created this quarter in our VAPAE Afterschool Programs, including pieces made by our Teaching Artists. Please join us for hot cocoa, stellar artworks, and a night with the VAPAE family.
