The young mother seemed both sad and inspired when she told me, “Just when I think I have them figured out, when I begin to understand how they think and feel, they move on to another stage.” She was describing the loss that is part of our ordinary growth and development in the lives of healthy families, their parents, and children. “I wish someone had prepared me for all the losses ahead,” she added. Her words, narrating both sadness and joy, were yet another reminder of the relentlessness of change, as earlier that day I had visited with a woman who was leaving her mother in an assisted living facility for the first time, and had a funeral that very afternoon for a young Dad who had died of cancer.
If we consider it honestly and thoughtfully, it may be true that all our life is full of transitions. We are rarely the same person tomorrow that we were yesterday, despite the appearances of constancy and order that we generally prefer.
An ancient preacher of the Hebrew people wrote: “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven…” (Ecclesiastes 3) The Psalms also are replete with images of the changing seasons of life...
But as is always the case for people of faith, times of change and transition are also opportunities to experience God’s rich and abiding faithfulness. Who knows what new and good things are yet ahead for us by God’s grace?
As we prepare to welcome a new Interim Pastor to partner with us in ministry and lead us through this continued time of transition, we can be confident that all the seasons of our life as individuals and as a congregation are in the hands of a living and gracious God. “For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.” (Psalm 100:5) Thanks be to God!
See you in Worship!
