I will never forget stepping out the door one morning, opening the mailbox and finding an envelope with the return address from my dear friend Sue.  Some years before, she and I had both worked at and attended a large Bay Area church.  I had been secretary to several pastors, while she worked in the front office, sharing her ready smiles and warm love with a host of people each and every day.  My first husband and I had two young boys and Sue and her husband were parents to a young boy and a baby girl.  Our two families enjoyed hanging out together, sharing meals, beach walks or just tossing balls with the kids.

One day while I was working in my little upstairs office, Sue came in sobbing.  You see, some years before, Sue and her husband had another son who had died in his sleep when he was 7 years old. He hadn’t been ill.  It was completely unexpected.  That day, Sue explained, was the anniversary of her little boy’s death and she was experiencing the same depth of grief she felt when it first happened.  We spent a long time that afternoon sitting together, sometimes talking about her memories of him, sometimes quietly breathing in God’s love and healing.  We felt God sitting with us in that little office that day.

When our family relocated, Sue and I didn’t call each other as often.  Both of us had growing families and busy jobs.  It was during this time that there were events that were placing enormous strain on my marriage.  At the time, I did not feel that I could talk about what was happening with anyone but God.  So, God was certainly getting an earful!

Then, in the midst of my dark time, out of the blue came the mail with Sue’s return address.  I opened the envelope.  Inside was a simple card with a picture of a cloud on the front and this message inside: Jesus is the silver lining in every cloud.  Sue could not have known except through the Holy Spirit’s prompting that I needed that word from God just then.

I have held on to that word from God through many dark times as a shining truth and as a treasured token of His love for me.
