Have you heard of the Kickstart Scheme? it provides funding to employers to create a 6 month job placement for a young person who is currently on Universal Credit and at risk of long-term unemployment.

Here is some feedback from a local small employer who has taken on a young person:

Kickstart enabled us to employ somebody that we would not have been able to afford otherwise. The scheme has enabled us to employ a young person and this is helping us to grow the equestrian business, as we are able to increase the number of clients that horse ride with us. Already, this increase in business means we should be able to keep this employee on after the 6 month period, which is great news! The scheme was straightforward and questions were quickly responded to and you have the opportunity to interview and choose a suitable employee. If you already pay staff through PAYE, it is so easy to add on the Kickstart employees.  The scheme is brilliant as you can involve a young person, that certainly has brought energy and new ideas to our team. We are so pleased as we would never have been able to take on a new person without the Kickstart funding.

VISITOR ECONOMY SUPPORT PROGRAMME

Summer 2021 Hospitality Recruitment Service

Do you have Hospitality vacancies that you cannot fill?

A new service for the 2021 season has been developed to promote your current vacancies directly to young people in schools and colleges here in Somerset.

Somerset County Council along with the four District Councils, Education Business Partnership and industry representatives have worked together to produce a link between a central web hospitality vacancy platform and direct communications to young people in the colleges and training centres.

The benefit of this vacancy portal is that we are able to speak directly and exclusively to people who will be looking for summer work opportunities.

The portal provider, Somerset Jobs, has reduced the cost to you, during the Summer 2021 season, of hosting your vacancy by 80% to just £4 until the end of July!

You can log on to the portal here https://somersetjobs.co.uk/ where you can register your vacancies (use the relevant discount codes hosp, hosp2 or hosp5). Alternatively send your vacancies to info@somersetjobs.co.uk and they will be uploaded for you (the discount will be applied on the invoice sent to you). Make sure you include:
  1. Job title
  2. Job location
  3. Job description – minimum age where appropriate
  4. Closing date
  5. How to apply – email, phone number or corporate careers page

Vision Consultation Update

We would like to thank each and everyone of you that participated in the consultation process to develop a new vision for Exmoor's rural economy.

200 responses to the survey were received from a range of businesses as well as community organisations and young people. A summary of the key survey findings can be read online here (PDF).

In addition a series of 1-2-1 interviews were held with key stakeholders and 8 focus groups were held to explore some of the emerging issues in more depth.

The project team from Ash Futures are now working with the Steering Group to reflect on the responses, alongside professional experience, the most relevant local, regional and national policy strategies and best practice from elsewhere to draft the vision. 3 further focus groups have been held to test the emerging vision which it is hoped will be published in August.

The vision will be used by all the project partners to collectively guide future work to sustain Exmoor's economy in harmony with the areas status as a National Park.

#WeAreExmoor - first 50 posts
#WeAreExmoor

Back in early May we marked the first 50 Exmoor businesses celebrated to date with the #WeAreExmoor campaign with a short compilation video.

Over 20 more businesses have since been profiled and we continue to go strong. It is not too late to get involved and send us your details if you'd like to celebrate your links to this special place. And don't forget you can all use the #WeAreExmoor hashtag to collectively celebrate the fantastic enterprise opportunities in the area when posting on social media.
