Mackay-Whitsunday waterway health scores released today.

Launch of the Mackay-Whitsunday Waterway Health Report Card

The The Mackay-Whitsunday region has received a full waterway health check, with the launch today of the Mackay-Whitsunday 2015 Report Card.

The report card provides comprehensive health scores for the region’s major freshwater river basins and estuaries, as well as inshore and offshore marine zones. With the Mackay-Whitsunday region providing a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, health scores also have wider implications for the future management of the iconic central Reef area.

The report card has been developed by the Mackay-Whitsunday Healthy Rivers to Reef Partnership, which draws members from 22 organisations across the community, industry, research groups and governments. It is being launched in Mackay today by special guest Hon Dr Steven Miles, Queensland Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection and Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef.

The Partnership’s Chair, Di Tarte, said the report card helped the Mackay-Whitsunday community better understand the health of their waterways.

“The report card helps us learn what is happening behind-the-scenes with the health of one of the region’s most important natural resources – water. Whether it be our rivers or our beautiful marine area.

“This year’s report card shows the majority of areas receiving Moderate scores (C). A number of areas were flagged as Poor (D), particularly freshwater basins. The offshore marine zone continues to score a Good (B).

“These scores indicate the current state of our waterways but most importantly they can now be used to inform management action. They show us where changes need to occur to improve our regional water quality, including some areas that require immediate attention, funding or resources.”
