New publication: 
Disease Control Priorities: Essential Surgery

Improving access to surgical care could save 1.5 million lives each year in poor countries, according to findings released by the Disease Control Priorities Network. Associate Professor Kjell Arne Johansson from the Global Health Priorities Research Group is one of the co-authors of the first volume of the Disease Control Priorities: Essential Surgery.

On TV: Anders Bærheim about his IgNobel prize

A few years ago Professor Anders Bærheim and his colleague Hogne Sandvik won the IgNobel prize - an award that honor research projects that make people LAUGH, and then THINK. The prizes are intended to celebrate the unusual, honor the imaginative — and spur people's interest in science, medicine, and technology. Bærheim won the prize for his report entitled "The effect of beer, garlic and sour cream on the appetite of leeches". Now he has been interviewed in the popular scientific TV programme Schrödingers katt and they have recreated some of the experiments in the show. See the video here

National Science Week 2015 
(Forskningsdagene) 16-27 September

Forskningsdagene is the annual National Science Week and UiB is the largest contributor to the events taking place in Bergen. Would you like to participate? All academic groups are invited to add more events to the festival period. If you have an event that you would like included in the festival programme, notify the organizers before 1st of May. Staff and personnel news

This month we want to welcome three new co-workers in administrative positions. Heidi Helén Thorsen (picture) has started working at our Centre of Excellence, CISMAC, in a 50 % permanent position. Tiril Grimeland will work at TVEPS (Centre for Interprofessional Work-Place Learning) in a 50 % temporary position and Anja Maria Steinsland Ariansen will be coordinating the project “Health Registries for Research” in a 40 % temporary position.

Holiday

As informed to you all from the department, all employees have to register minimum 3 weeks of summer holiday by April 1st in our personnel system Pagaweb. For more info, please see the e-mail sent to you March 13th from the Head of Administration.
