Guri Rørtveit

Dear all,

The summer holidays ended with the Solstrand seminar on the health cluster “Helsecampus Årstadvollen”, with a large group representing IGS. My impression is that many found the meeting inspirational and fruitful. Still, to make the most out of the planned cluster, we have to follow up the intentions from Solstrand in the years to come. The general meeting in late August will be one step in this process.
The IGS research strategy plan has been completed, and we are currently preparing it for print. This is one reason why you all have been asked to send research-related photographs to for use in the printed strategy document, as well as on our web site. It is still not too late! The document is the result of each research group’s thoughtful review of plans and goals for the next four years. Thanks to all of you for your active participation in the process!

Pain, Psychosis and Agitation in People with Dementia

For people with dementia it is common to experience neuropsychiatric symptoms, such as delusions, hallucinations and agitation. This study aims to investigate the relationship between pain and psychosis and agitation. Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) can be distressing for both patients and caregivers and are often the main reason for admission to a nursing home. Patients in nursing homes often suffer from pain, with 30-60% experiencing pain on a daily basis. This study, where Torstein Frugård Habiger is the first author, aims to investigate the relationship between pain and psychosis and agitation. Read more about the study here.

Survivors of cancer in young age are more financially dependent

A new study published in the journal Cancer studied all individuals born in Norway over a 20-year period (1965-1985), and compared those who received a cancer diagnosis before age 25 with those without cancer, with regards to receipt of governmental financial assistance, employment, income- and occupation discrepancies. The individuals were studied until they reached 22-42 years of age. The researchers, led by first author Maria Winther Gunnes, found an increased risk of the reception of governmental financial assistance, as well as a 40% increased risk of not being in paid employment, regardless of sex and for most large cancer types. Read more about the study here.

Occupational Health MOOC offered for 2nd time October 2017

Occupational Health doctors and researchers Bente Elisabeth Moen, Gro Tjalvin, Magne Bråtveit, Ole Jacob Møllerløkken met with Tane Holm Høisæter from DIGUiB for a 2-day intense internal seminar to review and revise their highly successful MOOC in Occupational Health. The 6-week course was offered in spring 2016 to nearly 6000 students of whom nearly a record 20% completed the course (average completion rates for MOOCs tend to be low – averaging around 10%). They particularly focused on making their discussion activities more inter-active. The course will be offered again in October 2016. Spread the word to anyone with an interest in this area.
