The five minutes that will change your week. Today, let's focus on the birth of Jesus.
Find a quiet space. Sit up tall, and close your eyes. Set a timer for one to two minutes per movement so that you can be fully present (or increase the time if you want a longer experience).
First, pay attention to God.
Take slow, deep breaths. Focus on the spot that you feel the breath in your body.
- As you breathe in, think, "Jesus, you became like me..."
- As you breathe out, think, "... so I might become like you" (1 John 3:1-2).
Second, ponder your inner world.
Process the following with Jesus:
- What parts of myself am I withholding from your transforming presence?
- How does your humility challenge me today?
Third, prepare to love others.
Ask Jesus to help you answer the following:
- Who do you want me to pursue with love this week?
- What can I lovingly sacrifice for them?
A closing prayer:
Jesus, let my heart never grow cold toward the Christmas story, but like Mary, help me treasure it and ponder it often. You love sinners and sufferers so much that you came to save us! You became a helpless baby so that you might die on behalf of a helpless humanity. Thank you!
Help me this Christmas to be more captivated by your humility than the gifts under the tree. Grow gratitude in me that overshadows my greed. Open my eyes and heart to see the people around me — their joys, fears, hopes, and pain. Inspire me to go out of my way to connect with them in humility and love in the same way that you met me.
Peace be with you until next week,
I'd love to connect with you on Facebook or Twitter.
If you're wondering, this is why I lead you to focus on your breath.
