The Thanksgiving season always has us thinking about the many things in our lives that we are grateful for and finding new ways to express that gratitude. This year, we are incredibly grateful for a very successful WAFLT Fall Conference. WAFLT is a 100% volunteer-based, non-profit organization. We are so lucky to have a dedicated board, outstanding presenters, helpful presiders, and passionate participating teachers all working  together to achieve great things! We would especially like to express our gratitude to our conference chair, Brenda Gaver and her husband Jason for devoting so much time and effort into arranging everything for us. We are also grateful for the feedback from our conference attendees. The board had a meeting and thoroughly discussed all the feedback, which will help us reach an even higher level in the future. Most importantly, we are grateful for our outgoing board members who have made long lasting contributions to our organization. Finally, let’s welcome our new incoming board members and wish them success as they work with us in the coming years.

Congratulations to our new ACTFL President, Bridget Yaden! Dr. Bridget Yaden is a Professor of Hispanic Studies, Director of the Language Resource Center, and Chair of Languages and Literatures at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, where she has taught Spanish language and linguistics as well as World Language and ELL theories and methods courses for 23 years. Bridget has been involved in STARTALK summer programs for the last 11 years, providing professional development as well as paths to certification for teachers of critical languages. She has served on many professional boards, including ACTFL, NWALL, AATSP Juan de Fuca Chapter, WAFLT, and PNCFL. Many of our WAFLT members have been inspired by her workshops. Our WAFLT board also appreciates her continuing leadership and dedication. We believe the future of ACTFL will become even more successful during her term.

Congratulations also go out to our new Pacific Northwest Council For Languages (PNCFL) President-Elect, Lynn Johnston. Lynn is one of the five 2020 ACTFL National Language Teacher of the Year Finalists and she represented our region proudly at the ACTFL 2019 Conference last week. She shared her knowledge at the session called “Fun with Functional Chunks” and presented to an appreciative  crowd. Several attendees came to the PNCFL booth and left  great comments about Lynn’s presentation. We look forward to Lynn’s new achievements on the regional level as PNCFL President-Elect.
