Using All Our Skills to Serve God

The news came as a shock. After serving as full-time missionaries to Spain, members of Chad’s family were suddenly denied visas. Reeling from the rejection, but still convinced of God’s call to serve in Spain, Chad began to question God and to search for a new direction. Serving as a full-time missionary had been fulfilling. And he had seen God’s hand at work in his ministry. So why the roadblock coupled with the continued intensity of the call?

Before heading to the mission field, Chad gained extensive experience running multiple businesses. His success in business was aided by his gifts of leadership and administration, and he enjoyed motivating and encouraging those around him. While in Spain, Chad saw a passion for scuba diving double as a ministry tool. He recalled the fruit that came from sharing the love of Christ with others while helping them learn how to dive. As Chad reviewed his time in Spain and consulted wise friends, he began to see how God had uniquely prepared him for a different ministry approach: re-entering Spain as an entrepreneur and engaging in a business as mission (BAM) venture.

BAM entrepreneurs establish sustainable and profitable businesses that operate in a biblical manner for the purpose of modeling Christian life and establishing churches. The businesses are legitimate enterprises that provide valued economic benefits and authentic access to the community. Chad now sees God leading him to open a scuba diving shop in Spain in order to reach the unreached for Christ. This business will allow him to employ Spaniards and to demonstrate godly principles at work. Chad says, “I believe this type of working relationship will not only allow me to share Christ, but will also provide the time and transparency needed to disciple those that are working side-by-side with me. I see the business as one way to allow others—especially those who would normally not enter a traditional church—to see a glimpse of God working in my life."

Do you feel called to serve God overseas but still feel drawn to serve in your profession? Would you like to learn more about how business owners, engineers, nurses, computer technicians, teachers, and others can serve God as disciplers and church planters without leaving their profession behind? If so, we invite you to consider attending the Go Equipped! Business as Mission and Tentmaking Conference held on the campus of SEND International from September 29 through October 3, 2015.

The conference will provide an introduction to the subjects tentmakers and business as mission entrepreneurs need to know before arriving on the field. It is open to those who want to learn more about tentmaking and BAM in general, as well as to those who want to discover if this form of ministry is for them.

The training will help those who have decided to become tentmakers or BAM-ers plan for an effective cross-cultural ministry by providing information about ministry principles and practices. Attendees will hear real-life examples and meet individuals who have utilized these ministry models. The conference also provides value for those who stay in their home country to minister cross-culturally since many of the principles are transferrable.

The conference will contain modules taught by members of Global Opportunities, TENT, SEND International, and Marketplace & Development Enterprises (MDE)—four organizations dedicated to helping tentmakers and BAMers in their ministries.

Will you pray with us that God brings those to the conference who want to learn more about these new ways to serve God overseas? And if you, like Chad, are searching for God’s direction in your life—and you are open to serving God overseas in your profession—please click the conference link below to discover more details about the upcoming conference.
