Nelson Nature Fortnightly Nature Fix
Welcome to the Nelson Nature Fortnightly Nature Fix - a regular snippet about Nelson's natural environment, and what we can do to look after it. If you know anyone who you think might enjoy getting a regular nature fix, please pass this on and encourage them to sign up.
Sunday was World Rivers Day and here in Nelson we are fortunate to have a magnificent river that runs right through the heart of our city.
One of the most important things we can all do to help the health of our rivers and streams is to ensure that we never put anything apart from rainwater down our outside drains – everything that goes into a drain goes directly into our rivers and streams and then out in to Tasman Bay. Do you know where your nearest drain is and which stream it feeds into?
Pollutants such as litter, sediment, paint, solvents, oil, grease, dog faeces, and food get in to the stormwater system - and our river - through the drains. This has negative impacts on stream life, on human users of the water, and on our marine environment.
To play your part in stopping pollutants getting in to our river, make sure that any water runoff from concreting, waterblasting, painting, cleaning, sanding, car or bike washing, or any earthworks, percolates onto grass or planted surfaces, which will filter the contaminants.
