East Harlem Community Forum
NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio has set forth, his plan to rezone communities like East Harlem to facilitate building more affordable housing. On Wednesday May 20th, residents & other stakeholders can be involved by joining in A Community Education Forum. The forum will be an opportunity for the whole community to be part of the discussion on the Neighborhood Study around the rezoning of East Harlem & the creation of new affordable housing. This forum is sponsored by Community Board 11, Community Voices Heard and co-sponsored by Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Assembly member Robert J. Rodriguez, and State Senator Jose Serrano. Come to El Museo del Bario 1230 5th Avenue & 104th Street at 6:30pm-8:30pm. Everyone is invited, and everyone is encouraged to attend.

Life on East 125th Street

Besides being a transportation hub - East 125th Street & Lexington is an epicenter for homeless & drug addicted individuals & the playground for their behavior that include urination, littering & disrupted behaviors.

The area is ground zero for high numbers of drug treatment centers & 100's of men get dropped daily from Ward Island. This past week, Council Speaker Melissa Mark -Viverito organized a walking tour of the area with commissioners of several state & city agencies; to see first hand the conditions that residents & office workers have to face every day. Their aim is to discuss current conditions in the area & try to come up with some concrete plans that would cure some immediate issues as well plan ahead on what matters that require a change in policy law.

This issue has been one of the major initiatives that NHEMA has been working on. Recently, we joined forces with the Harlem Neighborhood Block Association (HNBA) to gather signatures for a stop on drug treatments centers in our area. Since there's an over-saturation of these facilities, it has been extremely detrimental to the community. In the future, we hope to see a better East 125th Street.
