ART
SMART:

Recognize that rising sun? It's inspired by the public sculpture that graces the sides of the Metro-North tracks above the plaza. "Harlem Encore," by African-American artist Terry Adkins, was first installed in 1999 and is intended to represent triumph over adversity. "The work celebrates Harlem's past achievements and bright future," it is said. Read more about the artwork here.

IN THE NEWS:

Why is Uptown Grand Central a community-wide effort? Because it will take our entire community to make it happen. A type of synthetic marijuana called K2 is ravaging our neighborhood and our neighborhood. Learn more here:

"They call it K2, Spice and Green Giant. It's getting sold at bodegas and tobacco shops and people are getting seriously ill ..." -- WNYC, 8/5/2015.

"K2 is cheap -- only $1 for a high that can last up to four hours -- but the effects can produce a disastrous combination ranging from vomiting and epilepsy to catatonia ..."  -- The Takeaway, 8/4/2015.
Dear Friends,

It's Monday at Uptown Grand Central -- which means that our friends from ACE (the Association of Community Employment) are busy setting out a rainbow of colorful tables and chairs at our newly renovated community plaza at 125th Street & Park Avenue.

We'll be ready for you each Lunchtime on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. -- and all are welcome!
Enjoy your lunch at the plaza five times, and win a prize from East Harlem merchant Lady Lexis Sweets! Lady Lexis is a mother-and-daughter sweet shop, with mother Sharon creating the candies, and daughter Lexis baking the cookies and cakes. Both longtime East Harlem residents, Sharon and Lexis are committed to using all-natural ingredients, as well as helping the East Harlem merchant community thrive.
To see our full weekly schedule, see the column at left.

How to help with this initiative? Our rising sun above is a symbol -- a symbol of all the good things we as a community can create in the 125th Street space together. Share this e-newsletter and our fliers (the full schedule of plaza programming is here, and PDF links to the Farm Fresh flier are available in English here and Spanish here). Please contact us at info@nhema.com if you have any questions, or thoughts for the future. We're always looking for new partners and ideas!
