Lee Travis Demonstration Classes

Bowie Bee Farm
13201 Forest Drive, Bowie MD 20715
Lee Travis/Gina Jones
Wax Foundation, March 16th, 2019, 10:00am
If you’re debating the choice between wax foundation and plastic, please
come to this workshop.  I admit that in the past, you had to really want wax
foundation to go through the tedious process.  But Better Bee is now selling pre-
wired frames so 90% of the process is done for you.  I’ll show how to build the
frames from scratch, but when you see how much quicker starting with pre-wired
frames is, you won’t have any reason not to use wax foundation.  The bees will
love it, especially in your honey supers.
Walk-Away Splits, March 30th, 2019 11:00 (Rain date March 31st or April 7th)
This is a skill you will have to learn and the sooner the better.  The best way to
avoid swarms is to reduce the bee population in the hives.  The best way to do
that, without killing bees, is to split the hive.  The easiest way is a “walk-away
split”.  You don’t need to find the Queen.  We do this workshop every spring.  It’s a
very informal, hands-on, working day in the bee yard.  We will be actually making
our splits for nuc production.  Bring your suits and help us go through the hives.
I’ll explain the process.  There will be plenty of bee talk and new beekeepers can
get some experience with established hives.
Please let us know if you will be able to attend either workshop.
