New Program Can Defray the Cost of Produce Safety Compliance

One reason small and very small fruit and vegetable farmers give for not adopting a number of food safety practices is the expense of it. Whether it’s the cost of getting a Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) audit or attending food safety classes, small growers just don’t have the profit margin to afford these key components to access bigger markets. NMUxMSU Mending the Stress Fence
September 9th, 3:00-5:00pm
Farmers, farm workers and agricultural professionals endure numerous uncontrollable stressors. Many farmers face financial problems, market uncertainties, farm transfer issues, production challenges and communication barriers. You may know farmers who struggle with stress, anxiety, depression, burnout, indecision or suicidal thoughts. This short program will help participants create self-awareness and provide you with tools and resources to help those in need. Click here to learn more about the event. 
2022 Workshop Series
Thursday, July 28th at Belsolda Farm 488 Mangnum Rd
The National Association of Conservation Districts has awarded The Marquette Country Conservation District a 2022 Urban Agriculture Implementation Grant to increase agriculture eduction and crop yields in Marquette and Alger Counties. The Marquette County Conservation District will be partnering with Alger Conservation District to hold 4 workshops between the two counties, host an educational field day for students between both counties, and to areas within the counties with existing food gardens. U.P. Master Gardner Association Garden Tour
Saturday, July 30, 2022 (If raining, come on July 31st), 11a.m. - 1p.m., 734 Lakewood Lane in Chocolay
Ruth Ziel will host a tour of her gardens on Saturday, July 30th. Ruth has multiple gardens, some in shade others in full sun. Her front yard is planted in native grasses and flowers. She has a native garden in the back yard, as well as a vegetable garden, planted pots with herbs and bulbs, and a greenhouse. Ruth uses companion planting, and organic gardening techniques. Look for their yellow U.P. Master Gardener "Garden Tour" signs.


***The Upper Peninsula Master Gardener Association will have a new board of directors this fall to carry on the UPMGA "torch". The new board will continue to schedule in-person gardening presentations and other activities that are fun and educational.

MDARD Announces One-Time Grant Opportunity to Support Michigan Seafood Processors 
LANSING, MI—The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is seeking applications for the Seafood Processors Pandemic Response and Safety Block Grant program to support the state’s seafood processing sector. Funded through the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service, this program provides relief and assistance to eligible seafood processing facilities and processing vessels in response to the ongoing impacts from COVID-19. The grants will provide cost reimbursement for eligible expenditures that occurred between January 27, 2020, and December 31, 2022. Click here to read more.

The Marquette County Conservation District is located at 780 Commerce Dr. in Marquette, MI. The District Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Marquette County Conservation District (MCCD) including organization and supervision of office operations, coordinating programs and activities, and aiding the Board of Directors (Board). The District Manager shall be under the direct supervision of the Board. The Organizer will lead critical strategies in Michigan using an environmental and equity lens to advance policy priorities that can impact climate change mitigation, foster racial equity, and shape more resilient food systems.
