Elder Corner

Many of us love mowing the lawn. It's an hour when we can just escape while at the same time do something useful. I really like to keep my cut lines straight and that means I have to concentrate on the task at hand. Here's where things get difficult... my attention span is short and I just want to get back to my daydreaming. So my lines get crooked and I try over and over to stay on task.

Sounds like my prayer life...
I had the opportunity a couple of years ago to go to a pastors/elders conference in Minneapolis and it was an intense time of soaking in teaching on a variety of topics relative to church life and our personal walk. A favorite take-away was during a session on prayer where we learned one of the reasons why we get distracted and ultimately bored during prayer. What got my attention was hearing that most of us pray the same old things the same old way over and over, year after year. That's one of the reasons why we just can't focus for more than a few minutes and we end up feeling guilty when we try to pray effectively and consistently. So we try a new place to pray, or a different time of day, or make lists or journal. This works some of the time but I'm going to offer something that works every time.

Pray the scriptures...
Our speaker concentrated mostly on the Psalms. So let's start with the most familiar, Psalm 23, using it as a template for thoughtful prayer. Many times I use the New Living Translation.
The Lord is my shepherd  -- Lord, shepherd my spouse, my kids, my pastor, our elders, my co-workers through whatever they're dealing with right now.
I have all that I need -- Thank you for providing for me. Thank you that I have enough, that You are more than adequate.
He renews my strength -- Thanks, Lord for lifting me up at just the right time. Help me lean on you more. My wife, my son, my pastor, they need renewed strength and God, please provide the strength they need for what comes their way today.

Fill in the blanks -- Let the Word guide your prayer
He guides me along right paths.
Bringing honor to Your name.
Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid.
You are close beside me.
My cup overflows with blessings.
Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me.

A thought or two. Notice that I skipped a verse here and there. Your prayer focus does not need to fit every verse or thought. Just keep reading and stop and pray when a verse speaks out to you and keep moving. The Psalms are a great place to start building this discipline, but many other scriptures may jump start your prayer life as you get the hang of this.

Stay focused.
