Watercolor, Acrylic and Gesso on Paper
Greetings <<First Name>>,
I'm wishing you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays now because I won't be sending another newsletter until after the first of the year. So, cheers!
The painting above, Loner #7, landed me the Award of Distinction in the Fall Arizona Watercolor Exhibition at the Scottsdale Artists School judged by Robert Burridge.

I had a wonderful time teaching the workshop in Grand Rapids, Michigan in mid October. The artists were super, and I can't thank Dana Bradt of Inspirations of Art Studio enough for hosting the workshop and showing me a great time in Grand Rapids. And also many thanks to Virginia Withey for taking my workshop here in Arizona and spreading the word in Michigan. Here are some images from the Grand Rapids workshop.
In early November I taught a workshop at WHAM in Surprise, Arizona. Much thanks to Judith Visker for asking me to teach at this super studio and art center. Here are some images from the WHAM workshop.
Windowpane # 5 started as a demo for a recent workshop at WHAM in Surprise, Arizona and continued in the studio. Loner #10 is a painting from a few years back which I recently modified quite a bit. When a painting hangs around in my studio too long it becomes subject to alteration. That's how I am. I do that. I consider nothing I do as finished until it's sold. It seems my process is a continuum of images in flux, each one subject to my continuing review and, sometimes altered. It's my prerogative! But I'm always good with separation, unlike those who become so attached to their work they have a very hard time parting with it. So consider any image you see of mine which has not been purchased as potentially evolving.

Driven to Abstraction
For those of you in the Valley of the Sun I highly suggest seeing the current exhibit, "Driven to Abstraction", at Holland Gallery. It will only be up through the 26th of November. It's well worth the time to get out there and see the work of these two inspiring artists, Pat Cline and Marty Gibson. Perfect side trip if you're doing the "Hidden in the Hills" studio tours. It's an awesome show!
Freedom in Watermedia
This workshop is designed to help students paint in an intuitive manner starting with no preconceived notion or outcome. There will be no preliminary planning or drawing. Emotions and feelings will dictate direction as students use a variety of techniques to implement color, texture, line, shape and value. Instruction will start with arbitrary mark making and color application, working transparent to opaque building layers using a variety of mark making tools, watercolor, acrylic and gesso. The intuitive process relies on "seeing" so there will be regular evaluation of work in progress and the relationships between shape, texture, line, color and value. It is entirely possible finished work may be representational, but the goal is work that is aesthetically pleasing, unique and reflective of the artist's mind.
