Greetings  <<First Name>>,

Hope you're doing well and have had lots of fun this summer. All I can say about it is I've had a lot of fun but I'm happy we're heading into fall. Here in Phoenix, Arizona as many of my fellow painters, friends and associates know, temps can get beyond tolerable in the summer. This is especially true in June and July when temps are frequently above 110 not just for days but sometimes weeks. When that happens you want to get away. There are several escape routes I have used in the past and still use today. Growing up I can remember very well those summer family camping trips to the White Mountains in Northeast Arizona and in particular, Big Lake. Planning ahead back in the spring I made reservations for a group campground right next to Big Lake. Along for the fun were my wife Janet, 4 daughters, their significant others, 3 grandchildren and 3 dogs. We had a blast. It rained  a little everyday and temps were in the low 50's at night. Big difference from Phoenix in the middle of July.

Recent Drawings with Color

Lately I've been drawing with color. I guess you could call these paintings since I used a paint brush as well as an ink pen but to me they're drawings just because of the size and the fact that they're in my sketchbook. And while I'm on the subject I guess I should let you know I am of the opinion all painting is drawing. How can it not be? Maybe because paint is not a drawing medium? What the heck does that mean? So if you draw on the paper before you paint on it will that make it mixed media? NO! You can call it what you want but it's all drawing to me. I suppose paint-by-number styles are very similar to painting a house, you're just filling an area with paint, in which case maybe painting is not drawing. I draw with paint. Is that fair?

Here are some drawings with gouache and ink.

Freedom in Watermedia Workshops

My workshops are designed to teach students to paint intuitively, starting with no preconceived notion or outcome. There will be no preliminary planning or drawing. The process will dictate direction as students use a variety of techniques to implement color, texture, line, shape and value. Instruction will start with arbitrary mark making and color application, working transparent to opaque building layers using a variety of mark making tools, watercolor, gesso and acrylic. There will be regular comments and evaluation of work in progress concerning relationships between shape, texture, line, color and value. It is entirely possible finished work may be representational, but the goal is a painting which is visually pleasing and aligned with the artist's personal aesthetic.

Upcoming Workshops:
