Joseph's Coat - Loner #26  -  14 X 14 inches  -  Mixed Media on Paper

Greetings  <<First Name>>,

Hope you had a wonderful summer wherever you are. Here in The Valley of the Sun  we're starting to mellow out a bit from 100+ temps to slightly cooler high 90s. Oh yeah, the smell of fall is in the air. That's sort of a joke but if you've ever lived here in the Phoenix area for an extended period of time you can detect a difference. It's the not-so-dramatic changing of the season, at least in the mornings (haha). The painting above was a demo from a recent workshop in Lowell Michigan at the Franciscan Life Process Center. The painting was purchased by one of the participants. Following are some photos from the workshop. The Franciscan Life Process Center truly was a super setting for a workshop: it was verdant, peaceful, tranquil and therapeutic.

The light behind me is quite diffused as it travels through the adjacent greenhouse. The next photo is an outside view of the greenhouse.

All of the following images are paintings done by attendees and I must say they are quite good. You be the judge.

The following tribute was written by Barbara Groat. She took the most notes of anyone in the workshop and she wrote this bit about her painting. I believe it summed up the workshop quite well. A couple of the references are inside jokes or points of emphasis made during the workshop. The reference to the gopher is related to a story I told of my competitive trap shooting days when competing in an Arizona State Championship. I was doing quite well that particular day until the emergence of a gopher on the side of the trap house just as I called for my first target at the start of the last subevent. Of course I flinched, got shook and dropped 3 more targets and finished with a 94/100. The winning score was 96/100. Not sure why I told the story but that's where the gopher came from. You can likely figure out the other references and by the way the gopher was just taped on to the painting. Her cat later chewed it up later.

"This is a tail of two friends,
We all recognize Red Bull, whose name is on so many cans.

But who is he with? Spot, the dog?, Puff the Magic Dragon? or a giraffe?

Are there blocks of color for your eyes to rest?
Is there texture, shapes, proportions, and the rest?

Do the “Art Police” approve? Who cares?
Does StanK approve? Who cares?

But, this painting is not finished. What should be added?

A ring in the bull's nose” says Kathleen. “OK, done! Oops! It fell to his chin!”
...a pig, a rabbit, or Kendra's chicken? ...No
… a cigar for the bull? Not quite right...

The best thing of all jumped out of sight,
you are right, a gopher!"

Freedom in Watermedia Workshops

Freedom in Watermedia Workshops will help students paint intuitively, starting with no preconceived notion or outcome. There will be no preliminary planning or drawing. The process will dictate direction as students use a variety of techniques to implement color, texture, line, shape and value. Instruction will start with arbitrary mark making and color application, working transparent to opaque building layers using a variety of mark making tools, watercolor, gesso and acrylic. There will be regular comments and evaluation of work in progress concerning relationships between shape, texture, line, color and value. It is entirely possible finished work may be representational, but the goal is a painting which is visually pleasing and aligned with the artist's personal aesthetic.

Mixed it up on Canvas Workshops

Participants in the Mix it up on Canvas workshop will create mixed media/collage paintings on canvas using an intuitive process, starting with no preconceived or elaborate planning. The process will dictate direction as students use a variety of collage materials and techniques to implement color, texture (real and implied), line, shape and value. Instruction will start with semi-arbitrary application of collage materials in combination with acrylic, gesso, acrylic mediums and assorted mark-making tools. There will be regular comments and evaluation as work progresses concerning relationships between design elements and principles. The goal is a mixed media/collage painting which is visually pleasing and aligned with the artist’s personal aesthetic.
