Camino de Santiago, The Way

 with the

The Most Reverend, Donald Hying, Bishop of Madison

in celebration of the

75th Anniversary of the Diocese of Madison, Wisconsin
(open to everyone in and outside the Diocese)

Join us on this amazing pilgrimage following the footsteps of the Apostle St. James the Greater, evangelizer of Spain, brother of St. John the Evangelist, son of Zebedee. One of the most spectacular journeys you'll ever experience!  Our pilgrimage will be walking the famous Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James) across Spain, the second oldest pilgrimage route in Christendom.

Bonus! The pilgrimage will be making 3 BRIEF visits to amazingly beautiful Marian Shrines! Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, site of the apparitions of The Immaculate Conception to St. Bernadette! Shrine of the Virgin of Torreciudad, sitting on the foothills of the Aragonian Pyrenees, and site of many conversion miracles. Shrine/Co-Cathedral/Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar, site of Mary's visitation to St. James, the first ever recorded apparition (a bilocation to be exact) of Mary (40 AD).

During the first days of the pilgrimage there will be sporadic walking across Spain, but the last 100 kilometers (66 miles approximately) of the itinerary will be on foot in order to obtain the coveted pilgrimage certificate of The Camino, given by the Diocese of Santiago de Compostela. If you are not concerned about receiving the Camino Certificate, then walking on the Camino is not compulsory.

Visit the following locations: In France, Lourdes and the French Pyrenees. In Spain: Spanish Pyrenees, TorreciudadEl Pilar in Zaragoza (where Mary appeared to St. James),  LogroñoSanto Domingo de la CalzadaRioja Wine RegionBurgosPonferrada, Sarria, Portomarin  Palas del Rey, Arzua, O Pedrouzo, Santiago de Compostela, Finisterre (Land's End) or Fisterra, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

NOTE 4: Pilgrims who wish to complete this pilgrimage in it's entirety, in order to receive the certificate from Diocese of Santiago de Compostela, should know that there is an excessive amount of walking required (from 2 to 22 miles a day). However, there are options for those who wish to avoid excessive walking. Pilgrims may opt to walk portions of "The Way" some days and relax on others. Those who wish to do this, will not qualify for the Diocesan Certificate (we remind here that the certificate should not be the reason for joining this pilgrimage), but in any case, those pilgrims who choose not to walk "The Way", should at least be able to walk between 2 to 3 miles a day.

NOTE 5: In case one or both of our Chaplains become unable to participate, the pilgrimage will continue to operate and every effort will be made to obtain a substitute Priest(s).

NOTE 6: Pilgrimage is operated under the premise that a safe protocol is in place for travel and that France and Spain have opened their borders to receive US Citizens. Please read our generous Covid-19 policy on our Terms and Conditions (see brochure).

The famous pilgrimage symbol of the Shell can be found all across Spain, marking the way to walk toward the tomb of St. James located in the Cathedral of St. James.
The sepulcher of Glorious St. James, the Apostle, located under the Cathedral of St. James, in Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia, Spain. Every pilgrim will have the ability to pray in this solemn place.
Our pilgrimage starts with a brief visit to the famous Marian Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, France, where the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette. Our Lady revealed herself as The Immaculate Conception, asking humanity to do penance and to pray the rosary.
Our pilgrimage will be crossing the majestic Pyrenees Mountain Range, with spectacular views of France behind us and Spain in front of us. This pilgrimage provides for lots of intimate prayer time with God, surrounded by the natural beauty of His Creation from the Pyrenees to the Land's End in Finisterre or Fisterra, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Nestled on a promontory on the foothills of the Aragonian Pyrenees, the Shrine of the Virgin of Torreciudad is arguably one of the most beautiful Marian Shrines in all of Spain. Travel through the spectacular landscape surrounding the sanctuary and the Hermitage, dating back to the 1100’s. Torreciudad has been a local pilgrimage site for centuries. This shrine is famous for internal miracles through the Sacrament of Confession.

Venerated by pilgrims for almost 2000 years, the Pillar where Our Lady once stood in the year 40 AD, encouraging St. James to persevere with the evangelization of Spain, saying to him that these people will do great things for Her Son. The Pillar is protected by beautiful elaborated skirts (changed often, providing different colors for different pilgrims) handmade by faithful embroiderers, can be found inside the majestic Basilica/Co-Cathedral of Our Lady of the Pillar, in Zaragoza, Spain.
Camino markers show the way to Santiago! Whether on the pavement, or on stone blocks, on signs, on trees, on rocks, these signs can be found all over the Camino. Many of them have religious graffiti or notes of encouragement for pilgrims.

Join us in celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Madison Diocese with Bishop Hying, and experience the Camino de Santiago in a True Catholic Pilgrimage!  Past pilgrims tell us you that you will never regret it!
