December 2020 Newsletter

End Of Year Wrap-Up!

And just like that, 2020 is almost at an end...and what a year it's been!

There are many aspects of this year that have been difficult (the ongoing global pandemic, no festivals or events, funding cuts and changes), but at PacMam we count ourselves incredibly fortunate to have been able to continue doing fieldwork, collecting data, and providing educational content throughout these difficult times.

At this point, we would like to say a HUGE thank-you to all of our volunteers, interns, supporters, and funders: we could not do our work without each and every one of you, and your ongoing efforts to support our research and education in the Salish Sea truly makes all the difference! And a very special thank-you to our fantastic intern, Trevor Derie, who has stuck with us through the ups and downs of 2020 and the various changes that have occurred throughout the year - we are very grateful to have him on the team!

With that, let's continue our round-up of 2020 and what we have in store for you in 2021.
The "odd couple": this Stellar sea lion (left) and California sea lion (right) must have been looking for something tasty - the gulls are certainly interested! We don't usually see these two species together in Burrows Pass so this sighting definitely intrigued us.
UPDATE: GivingTuesday

As many of you saw in the last email, we were able to raise a massive $1,800 for our GivingTuesday & Annual Fundraiser! These donations will go straight back into funding our ongoing programs - long-term monitoring of harbor porpoises and harbor seals, Citizen Science, education and outreach, passive acoustic monitoring, and environmental DNA (eDNA).

Once again, many thanks to all who donated to our fundraiser, and if YOU would like to make a tax-deductible donation, just head over to our website to make a quick and secure donation.
A big thank-you to everyone who donated during GivingTuesday!
We Have An Online Gift Store!

That's right, you can now purchase your favorite PacMam swag online! We are excited to share our brand new Gift Store with you, where you can purchase PacMam hats, t-shirts, stuffed animals, and more, all while supporting PacMam. Every purchase provides important funds that help us continue our research and education efforts in our local community and farther afield.

We ship both within North America and internationally, and shipping costs are free within the US, so head on over and check it out! We can't wait to see you all wearing your PacMam gear, and when you do don't forget to tag us on social media (@pacificmammalresearch).
Our PacMam baseball cap, modelled by our very own intern Trevor, is just one of the items you can snag in our brand new Gift Store!
Don't Forget: Subscribe To The PacMam Podcast

We've had a blast recording our new podcast, the PacMam Podcast, during 2020 and we can't wait to share it with you. If you've been listening for a while, don't forget to leave a review and tell us what you like/don't like!

We would love to hear from YOU as we start to plan our recordings for 2021: do you want to learn more about a specific species of marine mammal? Would you like more information about PacMam itself? Or maybe you'd rather hear from other researchers in the marine mammal field?

Make sure to comment, send us an email ( or tag us on social media with your ideas. Click here to listen now and make sure to subscribe!

What a perfect shot to end the year with! This stunning photo of a harbor porpoise exhale captures the moment beautifully.
Well, that's it from us for the year 2020! It's been quite a year, but we can't wait to see what new and exciting things 2021 brings. In the meantime, make sure you're connected with us on social media: Facebook ("Pacific Mammal Research - PacMam") and Instagram (@PacificMammalResearch) will keep you up to date with PacMam.

And like we mentioned earlier, make sure to check out the PacMam Podcast on Anchor or wherever you like to listen! You can also watch our  "Marine Mammal Highlights" series on our YouTube Channel.

If you'd like more information about us, what we do, and/or would like to help support us in doing it through giving a donation, head over to our website. Every donation made goes straight back into funding our various programs, and in these difficult times we need your help more than ever to keep these going.

Thank you so much for your continued support - we wish you all Happy Holidays and a wonderful New Year!
