Welcome to RCS!
What an exciting summer we have had at RCS! Our Ice Skating in the Park Fundraiser was a huge success and we have enjoyed getting to know several new faces in the building. We have big plans in the next few months and are looking for ways to expand our services and generate more awareness about what we do for our friends and family in need.

We hope you could attend our first (of many) Ice Skating in the Park Summer Fundraiser. With your generous contributions and sponsorships, we raised close to $10,000.00 for our Soup Kitchen and Homeless Shelter! The feedback was so positive, and we had so much fun, that we have already saved next year's date for the weekend of July 23, 2016! Mark your calendars to attend because it is going to be even bigger and better next year!

We especially want to thank our sponsors who allowed us to cover our costs before the event even started and the volunteers who generously gave their time at the event to make it even more successful. We could not have done this without you, so thank you for your participation!

There are many events this fall including CROP Walk, Neuse River Bridge Run, Neuse River Back Water Open Fishing Tournament and our Winter Coat Giveaway. The CROP Walk on September 27th raises awareness and funds for helping to stamp out hunger in New Bern. RCS receives 25% of all proceeds, so this is a big event for us. We encourage you to get a team together for an afternoon walk in downtown New Bern.

The Bridge Run will take place on October 17, and RCS is one of eight non-profits who benefit from the funds raised during the event. Last year we received over $8000! We need volunteers to help serve over 1,000 runners at the Pasta Push dinner on Friday, October 16. Please let us know if you are interested. The Bridge Run offers a 5K, 10K and half-marathon run, so mark your calendar and prepare to join us for a great cause and a great time.

If you're not a runner, there's a fishing tournament October 17th to benefit RCS! This is a one day tournament on the Neuse. Last year, we received over 200 pounds of fish and over $3000! Special thank you to Malcolm Quay who puts this on for us each year. We really appreciate it!

We are also sponsoring a Winter Coat Giveaway with UPHC Rocky Run Church that will take place on November 7th. Please start collecting new/gently used coats for men, women and children. Donations will be accepted at RCS and UPHC Rocky Run now through November 6th.

Come see the exciting changes at RCS! Our staff is always working to improve our clients and our facility. If you have not been to RCS in a while, we invite you to take a tour. And as always, we thank you for your continued support.

Resident Spotlight
Resident Spotlight -- Ora Jones
Ora came into our shelter 3 times in 3 years. Each time she would make one step closer to living independently. She credits the RCS shelter for allowing her to get her mind straight. She says, “I had been living in an abusive relationship and needed for it to end. I was scared when I finally decided to make time for myself and learn to love myself. I learned how to believe in myself and do what I needed to do to make me a better person. RCS gave me the confidence to change my circumstances. Today I am working as a personal care nurse, and I thank the staff at RCS for encouraging me to get a job and stay with it. I know that I am a better person and I can always hold my head up and know that I am beautiful inside and out.”

We are proud of Ora for taking charge of her life and making a difference for herself and her family. RCS provides many services that can help our guests get back on their feet in a time of need. We offer educational opportunities, rent and utility assistance, food and clothing fulfillment, spiritual guidance, nutritional counseling and so much more! If you know of someone who would benefit from RCS, please send them our way. And if you would like to help make a difference in someone life, we have LOTS of volunteer opportunities -- just call!

Summer Highlights
Ice Skating in the Park

Our inaugural summer fundraiser kicked off July 17 & 18 with Ice Skating in the Park! The event was a HUGE success and plans are already underway for next year's event. SAVE THE DATE for July 23, 2016! We enjoyed two days of skating, music, water activities, children's crafts, delicious food and Kona Ice! We received some great publicity from V103.3, WITN, WCTI, and the Sun Journal as we continue to educate our community about hunger and homelessness in our area. Thank you to all of our sponsors who helped make this first event so successful -- together we raised nearly $10,000 to benefit the programs and services offered at RCS for those in need!

Christmas in July

Thank you to Thea's Ideas Christmas in July event held at the Doubletree on July 23rd! Each year, Thea hosts a special vendor show for new and existing clients to see the latest in promotional items. This is the third year she has collected food and toiletries for RCS. Anyone who brought in a canned good or toiletry item for the Shelter received a Bogue Sound watermelon! Over 100 pounds of food was collected at this year's event! THANK YOU!

RCS is pleased to welcome Deb Swan to help organize our volunteer efforts at a much larger scale. Deb has years of experience as VP of Operations for a large corporation and we are looking forward to new volunteer opportunities and proper training so we are ready for a busy fall and winter season!
