NOVEMBER NEWS 2015
Welcome to RCS!
We can not believe that we are heading into the Holiday season! Where did the summer go? The kids are already talking about Christmas vacation and we feel like they just went back to school! That being said, we understand that the holidays are a difficult time for most of our guests and we are already making preparations for the cold winter months.
RCS has seen a dramatic increase in the need for our services over the past couple of years due to reductions in assistance programs for the surrounding counties. This increasing need is outpacing our current donations, grants, and resources and we need your help now more than ever!

We are being more creative in fundraising opportunities and looking to get more involvement from local churches, businesses and individuals. We welcome any opportunity we can get to speak about RCS to civic and social groups, so please keep us in mind if you are a member of a group that wants to help make a difference in the lives of so many!

Upcoming events include the Winter Coat Giveaway, sponsored by UPHC Rocky Run Church, participation in the Annual Holiday Show at the Convention Center and at the Annual Sledding, Shopping and Food Drive Sunday. Find out more about these events in the newsletter below! There are lots of volunteer opportunities for groups and/or individuals, so please don't hesitate to sign up.

As always, our staff is working to improve our clients and our facility. If you have not been to RCS in a while, we invite you to take a tour. We thank you for your continued support and look forward to expanding our services and programs throughout the year.

Blessings,
Juliet Rogers, Executive Director
Volunteer Spotlight
Volunteer Spotlight -- Antoinette "Toni" Scriven
Toni works tirelessly 6 days a week from the time we open until the warehouse doors go down.

She is the proud mother of six children, and is such a joy and blessing to be around. We want to thank her for stepping up in Sally’s absence and helping keep the warehouse in great working order!

Upcoming Events

We want our guests to be warm this winter and this is the perfect opportunity to help make a difference!

We will also be accepting new/gently used blankets for our Shelter guests. Please spread the word!

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)
November 19, 2015 | RCS
The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is scheduled for Thursday, November 19th at RCS. TEFAP provides USDA food commodities once each quarter for families of Craven County who live at or below the poverty level. Last quarter, nearly 2000 individuals waited in line for over 3 hours to receive a bag of groceries that consisted of ground beef, canned vegetables, canned fruit, boxed potatoes and juice (approximately $15-$20 worth of groceries). We are thankful to have Marines from USMC Cherry Point volunteer their time every TEFAP to help make the day run smoothly. Anyone who thinks that hunger and homelessness does not exist in New Bern, should come to RCS on any of these days for an eye-opening experience. The line for food stretches for blocks.
Beary Merry Christmas Sledding, Shopping & Food Drive
December 13, 2015 | Corner of S. Front and Craven Streets
Join us for the 3rd Annual Sledding, Shopping & RCS Food Drive at the corner of S. Front and Craven Streets in downtown New Bern. This is one of the MOST FUN events of the Beary Merry Christmas schedule and we are thrilled to be part of it! There will be six sleds, bounce houses, hot chocolate, cookies and activities for the kids! $5 admission (hot chocolate and cookies are extra) -- a portion of the proceeds comes back to RCS. We will also be accepting food donations in our sleigh! For more information, go to www.BearyMerryChristmas.com.

RCS Highlights
RCS Welcomes Alice MacArthur

RCS is pleased to announce that Alice MacArthur is the new Director of Shelter Services effective October 2015. Alice brings several years of non-profit experience to RCS as a business leader and as a volunteer. Prior to joining RCS, Alice owned a successful food truck business called “Who’s Hungry?”, where she developed a mission called Loaves & Fishes. Proceeds from sales and tips were used to “pay it forward” to homeless guests who could not afford anything to eat. Alice will bring her compassion for helping those in need to her new experience at RCS by developing new programs that will help shelter guests achieve independence and responsibility.

The Shelter has plans to expand due to the increasing needs of our community. MacArthur will help identify key issues that need to be addressed and work closely with other leaders at RCS and the City of New Bern to develop a solid plan for expansion.

Mayor Outlaw and Aldermen Visit RCS
Mayor Dana Outlaw, Aldermen Dallas Blackiston, Pat Schaible, and Johnny Ray Kinsey visited RCS on October 29th to tour the facility and learn more about the growing needs of our community and the services that RCS provides to service those needs. It is important that community leaders understand how many local people are in need and see what different organizations can offer. RCS welcomes groups and/or individuals to tour our facility and learn about the growing needs of our community and what RCS does to help. We are always in need of responsible and caring volunteers, as well as ways to bridge organizations that can work together for the common good. Please call our office if you would like to schedule a tour.

RCS Partners with Craven Community College
RCS is pleased to partner with Craven Community College to offer a series of new classes for Craven County residents. New classes include Forklift Certification, Industrial Cleaning, HVAC, Weatherization, and Resume Writing. Classes will be taught by instructors of the College's Workforce Development program. Students will get the certification/credentials they need to become eligible employees for a variety of different jobs. The College will also assist with job placement by partnering with local businesses who are hiring. For more information about these and other classes, please contact Workforce Development at Craven Community College or call 252-638-7200.
