A Word from Our Chair

Fall into the Pool!
Fall is here and with the days getting shorter, it is a perfect time to swim more!  Avoid the feeling of never seeing sunlight by keeping your head in the water and fool yourself into a sunny swimming mood!
The GRIN Board has been busy getting an operating budget prepared for the year! The Board and Club Reps will be voting on the budget on Thursday, October 27 at 8:00p. Please identify your Club Representative by Wednesday, October 26 at 12:00 noon, so your team has a vote! WE will be discussing other new items, including another new Indiana Open Water event!
There are many events on our calendar all over the state; we hope to see you at one or more this season! And, be on the lookout for more information on the USMS Spring National Championships coming to Indy in 2018!!
See you in the pool!

Meet our new Fitness Chair, Ron Gatte

Welcome to GRIN's new Fitness Chair, Ron Gatte! Swimming for about 8 years, Ron started out with ISA swimming with his kids, is a certified USA Swimming Official, and sat on the Board of the Carmel Swim Club. Ron competes in triathlons, participated in his first Half Ironman this past spring, and swam in his first pool competition this past weekend at the 1st Annual Chris Clarke Invitational. Ron enjoys both swimming and all-around fitness, and is looking forward to sharing his fitness ideas with all of you. If there are topics you are curious about, please email Ron. Welcome aboard!

Congratulations Dick Sider!

Congratulations to Dick Sidner for winning the 2016 Open Water Service Award, which is a great national honor. Dick is the fourth person to receive this award. The award, announced last week at the USMS convention in Atlanta, is given in recognition of Dick's long history of hosting open water national championships and events, as well as his continued work in teaching open water skills.

Dick's accomplishments are too many to list, but we'll try. Dick organized and hosted the inaugural 25K Open Water National Championship in 2008 in Morse Lake. The success of the 25K encouraged USMS to award Dick and the Noblesville Adult Swim Team the 10K National Championship in 2010, the 25K National Championship in 2012, the 5K National Championship in 2013, and the 15K National Championship in 2015.

Dick has been a member of USMS since 1990 and served on the Long Distance Committee from 2000-2014. He has been attending the USMS annual convention regularly since 2000 as a representative of GRIN and a member of this committee. He also spent five years as photographer for the USMS delegate book. He is a past Dorothy Donnelly Award for Service winner.

On the local front, Dick served on the GRIN Board, volunteering to guide Indiana swimming, from 1993-2015. He served as Chair for three separate terms and has won the Irv Merritt Volunteer of the Year Award.

Dick is a certified Level 4 USMS Recognized Coach, and he has competed in numerous open water swims himself, including Chicago’s Big Shoulders and La Jolla Cove Rough Water swims.

He was nominated by Chris Sikich and letters were written in support from Doug Church, Victoria Rian, Jim Barber, Cheryl Gettelfinger, Lisa Brown, Marcia Cleveland of Illinois Masters, Ali Hall of Sierra Nevada Masters, and Susan Kirk of Berkley New Jersey Masters.

Congratulations, Dick!
