A Word from Our Chair

Make a Goal!
Are you training for the State Meet April 8 & 9 in Munster? Are you using our State meet as a warm up for the USMS Nationals in Riverside, CA, on April 27th?  Is your focus April's Adult Learn to Swim Month? Did you swim the USMS One-Hour Postal?  You have until the end of February this year! Have you tried the Pentathlon Challenge or are you swimming to join the 100 Mile Club? Whatever your goal, make that goal a priority this year.  Swim for a reason; give yourself a challenge this year. Work towards something purposeful! See what amazing things you can do for yourself or others.
That is what works for me. I need a goal. I have to have a purpose for my swimming or I just go through the motions. I love to swim Open Water and to teach adults. My favorite is April's Adult Learn to Swim initiative.  Our team gives free Adult swim lessons in April. It is so wonderful to help an adult become safe in the water for the first time in their life! Many teams offer this. If you are interested in starting an adult learn-to-swim program for your team, just let me know. I can help with ideas.
Please email me at and let us know what goals you have this year!  Maybe you can inspire someone else!

A Word from our Fitness Chair
It is easy to stay indoors in the warmth of the fireplace during the winter months, but this is the best season for training - no matter what your event. All you need is dedication and the drive to achieve your goals.  We all feel better when we can get outside and feel the cooler temperatures on our faces. Just remember to dress in layers and remove the top layer as you get warm.  When the weather is not cooperating, bring your training inside and remember to make your workouts fun and train with a friend. Know your pace and challenge yourself to go a step above.

To keep you fueled, here is a great recipe for protein balls I love to grab on the go:
  • 2 cups peanut butter
  • 2 scoops protein powder
  • 1/3 cup molasses
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • Flack seed
Simply mix, form into balls, and refrigerate for 2 hours.

Please let me know if there are topics you'd like to learn more about. Don't forget to share your goals with me ( and I will help keep you on track.

GRIN's 100-Mile Club
Need a new fitness goal for 2017? Strive to be in GRIN's 100-Mile Club (or 200-Mile, 300-Mile, etc.) Swimmers can track their swimming totals using the USMS Fitness Log (FLOG), which is free to all USMS members. Simply log in to My USMS (first time users will have to create their account), enter Go the Distance, and log your daily yardage. Swimmers who attain 100-mile increments will be recognized in our newsletter and on the GRIN website. Set your goals, set up your FLOG, and get to the pool! Who will be 1st to swim 100 miles?
