De Buck Gallery is pleased to present a vibrant collection of works by artists Amani Lewis, Devan Shimoyama, Rashaad Newsome, Marielle Plaisir, Stephen Towns, and Wycliffe Mundopa. The works featured celebrate identity through painting, textile, and sculpture while examining the artists’ connection to history and exploring the complex and layered narratives of their cultures and communities.
We will be highlighting exciting new works including lush figurative paintings by Amani Lewis, quilts by Stephen Towns that depict allegorical images based on the life of Harriet Tubman, emotive paintings by Devan Shimoyama as well as swing sculptures that address issues of racial violence in the United States, collage works by Rashaad Newsome and new multimedia works by Marielle Plaisir that examine issues of domination and race through dream-like and surreal imagery. For the first time, De Buck Gallery will be also be featuring recent work by Zimbabwe-based artist, Wycliffe Mundopa, whose passionate paintings highlight the lives and difficulties of women and children in contemporary Harare.
