De Buck Gallery is delighted to announce Always Been Told, the second solo exhibition by Belgian artist, Gommaar Gilliams, at the gallery. Always Been Told will be on view from Thursday March 5 to Saturday March 28, 2020. An opening reception will be held at 507 W 27th Street, New York, on Thursday March 5, from 6-8 PM.
Always Been Told invites the viewer into a lush, timeless world that is at once familiar and fantastical, a dreamlike utopia filled with longing. Melancholic and mystical, Gilliams’ paintings address themes of transition, duality, desire, and memory through iconography drawn from both European and Eastern storytelling. The pieces are assemblages of both oil and acrylic painting with moments of collaged fiber-work, combining varied materials that reference medieval tapestries.
