Ok, I got carried away. When I decided to do a round-up of Modern Maples quilts, I had no idea Instagram would be inundated with them! So while I had gathered up some of my very favorites to share with you, I saw more that I just couldn't resist including! So you'll find plenty in this issue, links to even more, and I'm sure you'll enjoy them as much as I have.

In the last issue of The Scrap Basket, I mentioned 3 bloghops I was participating in. Well, I've posted all my projects, so if you missed them, check out my Candy Land quilt, a Sweet Tweets placemat, and the 2-sided Good Neighbors pincushion. Whew! Enough secret sewing for a bit!

It's been a couple of years since I created the Falling for Modern Maples flickr group, hoping to find some folks willing to sew along with me as I made my own Modern Maples quilt, Anticipating Autumn. I found plenty, am still smitten with this traditional-made-modern block, and happily, modern maple projects continue to be added to the group, as others are taken with it too.

In addition to the Falling for Modern Maples group, you'll find lots of modern maples on Instagram under the hashtag #modernmaples, and on my Pinterest board, Modern Maples. Maybe you'll be inspired to make one too!

Note that for each of the following quilts, if known, I'll include the block tutorial used and block size, like this:

12 1/2" block

The Maple Leaf Mini Quilt by Nicole/Modern Handcraft is one of the first new ones to catch my eye this season. With mini quilts being all the rage these days, this would be a perfect place to start, with just 4 blocks and a sweetly pieced border. Love the light blue Nicole added in to her fall mix of colors. Nicole's own Modern Maples tutorial, 12 1/2" block

Annabella/Life's Rich Pattern's Thoroughly Modern Maples (Marrakech Edition) is so bright and scrappy! Made by beemates, Annabella asked for one block in traditional fall colours and the second in jewel tones - both scrappy with low volume backgrounds. Permission was given to make smaller blocks than the suggested tutorial, if desired. It's a fun mix, don't you think? [lifesrichpattern]

Maple Leaf block tutorial by All Patched Up was suggested;
12 1/2" block
In a bit of an unconventional palette, but closely controlled and with meaning to the recipients is Maple Leaf Quilt by Jess/Elven Garden Quilts. Be sure to click through to Jess' post to see her lovely free-motion quilting, a mix of straight-line and designs unique to each leaf. [elvengardenquilts]

traditional Maple Leaf block (no tutorial given); 15" block

The Oakshott Modern Maples Quilt by Amy/Diary of a Quilter pretty much screams 'fall', and the custom quilting by Emily Sessions added leaf veining that is unique and spot on. [diaryofaquilter]

After first seeing Sara/[mangosteenha]'s Maple Leaf quilt on The Village Haberdashery's blog, I found myself going back to it time and again! Quite unlike my own quilt, it was so very striking in its own special way. [vhaberdashery]

Darcy/Modern Cozy's Massive Maples has been a favorite of mine ever since she made it, and why, oh why, haven't I already made one for myself? Just 4 supersized blocks to make a 60" square quilt - modern maple perfection! [darcychildress]

Darcy's adapted maple leaf block, 30 1/2" block
Pam/[sewmama123] made a grouping of small, scrappy leaves, and surrounded it with lots of negative space - in Camel Essex Linen no less! The lighter solid in the center is Neutral Essex, and Pam quilted it all to simulate wind "as the leaves swirl and fall". Oh yeah.

traditional Maple Leaf block (no tutorial given); 6 1/2" block

Melissa/My Fabric Relish's all-solid Modern Maples quilt makes me swoon, with her beautiful hand-dyed fabrics and their vivid colors. I also really love the extra interest the reverse maple blocks give. Just so striking. [myfabricrelish]

Last but by no means least, is Dani/Block M Quilts' Modern Maple quilt "October". A little confession here . . . about 2 weeks ago I saw Dani's work-in-progress photos in the Falling for Modern Maples flickr group and fell in love with them! (You can also see them in her work-in-progress blog post here.) So I asked if I could use them in this issue, even though they weren't a finished quilt yet. But noooo. Dani was motivated to finish up her quilt so I could share it in all its completed glory. Note the dark stems on just some of the blocks . . . and the mix of neutral background fabrics. So much to love. [blockmquilts on flickr]

This time 'a glance back' is taken more literally as 'a glance at the back.' I couldn't resist sharing the one Dani/Block M Quilts made for her modern maples quilt, shared above. Love her incorporation of the 2 maple blocks. See more ideas for pieced backs on my Quilt Backs Pinterest board.

P.S. Have you heard about the Modern Sampler QAL hosted by Caitlin/Salty Oat? The quilt pattern is by Yoshiko Jinzenji from Japan, and I'm pretty excited to be joining in. Just 1 block a month is all it takes! Click here to see my first block.
