Season Wrap-Up

As the sun sets on another fantastic year at the Scarborough Junior Football Club, we can take some time to review how the 2019 season unfolded.

As usual, we fielded strong numbers for Pre-Primary, Year 1 and Year 2 Auskick, with the Annual Gala Day held once again at City Beach Oval in August. All of the kids and parents enjoyed the wonderful carnival atmosphere and well done to everyone that gets involved to make this day happen each and every year - with particular thanks to the West Coast JFC for hosting such a massive event.

We had a strong team in the Year 9 - 11 girls competition with our girls celebrating their first win on the 21st of June 2019. The girls had gone win-less in 2018, so they celebrated in style, belting out a very exuberant rendition of the Club song! We look forward to welcoming more girls into the Club and aim to field multiple sides in the 2020 season.

Our modified teams all played within the true spirit of the game and we were able to field multiple sides in year's 3 and 4. Our Year 6 team had the amazing opportunity to play at half time during AFL round 14 West Coast v Essendon game at Optus Stadium on the 20th of June.

In 2019, the Club has been fortunate to be able to have teams across all youth age groups - and all with strong numbers. A big congratulations needs to go to the Year 9 and Under 18's Gold team for making it all the way through to the Grand Final and both winning their respective games. Making a Grand Final is a massive achievement in itself and then to go on and win is amazing. Our Under 18's Gold team then went on to play Bassendean Under 18's at the WAFC State Grand Final, just getting pipped at the post in a nail biting finish.

To add the cherry on top of a wonderful season, we also saw Louis Tangney from Year 8 win the Best and Fairest award for his division, Charlotte Tompkin was Runner Up Best and Fairest for her division in the Year 9 - 11 girls competition and Thomas Lawson from the Under 18's also took out the Runner Up Best and Fairest in his division - well done everyone!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the 2019 Club Committee Members, as they are the true heart and soul of the Club and the place just wouldn't run without them.

We will be having our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday the 23rd of October at 7pm at the Scarborough Sports & Community Club (Scarborough Sportsmen's Club). There will be food and drinks, so come along and hear more about what the Club has been up to and how you can help support the Club in 2020. There are a few Committee Members that will be leaving us at the end of 2019 and their positions will need to be filled. Don't worry though, as they will provide a full handover to the wonderful parents that step up to help. Ideally we would like parents from year 3 to year 7 to nominate for the Committee. So if you have always wanted to help out a bit more, but not sure how to go about it, come along to the AGM and nominate - you won't regret it.

Well done to everyone that has put in the hard yards at the Club this year from the players, parents, coaches, team mangers, first aiders, runners, water carriers, boundary umpires, parent umpires, committee members, canteen volunteers, the bbq'ers and everyone in between - enjoy the break and we look forward to seeing everyone back at the Club in 2020.

18s Gold (Yr11) Win 2019 Premiership

Scarborough Gold 13.14 (92) def North Beach Gold 6.7 (43)

Scarborough Gold dominated the first half, going into the main break with a healthy lead. North Beach started the third quarter with renewed vigour before our boys reasserted themselves to maintain their lead through the second half.

It was a great team effort on the day, with all players going hard at the ball, both in offense and defense. Full Forward, Dylan Mulligan, was awarded Best on Ground by the umpires after bagging 7.2 (44). Credit must also go to a miserly backline that restricted North Beach’s scoring opportunities.

Congratulations to all the boys on a fantastic season!

Yr9 Win 2019 Premiership

Scarborough 11.5 (71) def Warwick Greenwood 2.3 (15)

Scarborough got out to a fast start, controlling the ball through the midfield and finding a flying Kai Humphry. This continued in the second quarter with Scarborough team building a healthy half time lead of 31-1.
Warwick Greenwood came out strongly in the third quarter, however Scarborough's teamwork swung the momentum back to their favour.
The final quarter was arguably the finest the team had played the entire season, running out eventual winners 11-5 (71) to 2-3 (15). Kai Humprhys was judged best on ground with his 5 goal performance from the half forward line. However, every player can be proud of their efforts as in a stellar team performance.

Northern Conference Fairest & Best Winners
and Runner-Ups

Congratulations to Louis Tangney for winning the Northern Conference, Year 8 Maroon competition, Fairest & Best award. Louis’ outstanding 2019 season was recognised by the umpires who awarded him a total of 27 Fairest & Best votes.

Congratulations to Charlotte Tompkin for being awarded Runner-Up in the Northern Conference Year 9-11 Red Youth Girls competition. This award capped a fantastic season for Charlotte and our Youth Girls team who, after going winless in 2018 and a slow start to 2019, won 5 of their final 7 games.

Congratulations to Thomas Lawson for being awarded Runner-Up in the Northern Conference 18s Blue competition. In another tight contest, Thomas was just 2 votes behind the winner in a four-way tie for Runner-Up, and three players, including Dan Donovan and Tim Hogan from Scarborough were just 1 vote outside the awards with 10 votes each.

Well done Louis, Charlotte and Thomas, the Club is very proud to have you wearing the Sea Eagles jumper.

SJFC Players Help Claremont Win 2019 Simply Energy WAFL Colts Premiership

SJFC Claremont Colts players: Louis Passera, Charlie Malone, Kai Harwood, and Ben Ramshaw
SJFC players, Louis Passera, Charlie Malone and Ben Ramshaw played in the Claremont Colt's 13.4 (82) to 11.11 (77) victory over Peel.

Claremont had to win into the Grand Final the hard way by winning last Sunday's preliminary final against West Perth and the stage was set for a cracking contest between the Thunder and Tigers.

After Claremont led by 15 points late in the first quarter, Peel responded and had their own 14-point advantage by three quarter-time after a purple patch from Ben Middleton where he kicked three of his five goals.

But the game was destined for a thrilling finish and that happened with Claremont taking the lead after kicking three of the first four goals of the last term, with Charlie Malone snapping two.

The premiership triumph means Claremont remains the dominant colts team in recent times including having now won four of the past seven flags.
