Visit a State Park or Beach this weekend
There are several great events happening! 

Evening at the Adobe: Enjoy a sunset visit to Castro Adobe State Historic Park, 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. There will be music under the lights in the restored Potter-Church Garden, tours and snacks. Admission is free and carpooling is encouraged. 184 Old Adobe Road, Watsonville. 
Geology Walk: Take part in the Geology Walk at Año Nuevo State Park. Learn about the great forces affecting Cove Beach for hundreds of years, 1-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. This event is free; parking is $10 and supports the park. 1 New Years Creek Road, Pescadero.
Life on the Ranch: Experience what it was like to live on a dairy ranch in the early 1900s with a visit to Wilder Ranch State Park. This free event is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. Parking is $10 and supports the park. 1401 Coast Road, Santa Cruz.

Mole cook-off competition is full!
The fourth annual Mole & Mariachi Festival will be on Saturday, September 10. A record 10 mole chefs have signed up for the mole contest, including returning champions El Jardin, My Mom's Mole and Mama Marquita's. Tasting kits will be $10 and include sample of six mole sauces. Additional tastes can be purchased individually. 

There also will be food for sale, including mole tacos, burritos and tamales, as well as beer by Discretion Brewing, wine from Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard and chavelas to purchase.

This event raises funds to support restoration projects and educational programs at Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park, 144 School St. in Santa Cruz. Please join us as a sponsor or plan to attend! Volunteer also are needed. Dance in mojiganga costumes, sell tickets, help with setup or breakdown of the event, hang the piñatas every hour, assist with kids' crafts and more. Email John to volunteer.
Explore an archaeology project
The public is invited to an archaeology viewing at Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park, 1-2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12. This is part of a summer collaboration between California State Parks and Santa Clara University to process artifacts excavated from part of the former neophyte housing at Mission Santa Clara. The event is free. 144 School St., Santa Cruz.
#BooksInParks contest! 
To celebrate Terry Tempest Williams' visit to Santa Cruz and her new book The Hour of Land: A Personal Topography of America's National Parks, Friends is partnering with Bookshop Santa Cruz for a #BooksInParks social media photo contest. Share a photo of yourself reading in nature — especially a State Park or Beach — and share it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #BooksInParks. Favorite images will win prizes from Friends and Bookshop. 

Also plan to attend Williams' book talk at Bookshop, 7-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29.
