Mission Lecture Series wraps up with adobe preservation talk
In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park has hosted a three-part lecture series about the history of the Mission. The third and final of the talks, titled “Saving our Oldest Building, Then and Now," will be today, Thursday, Nov. 17. 

Santa Cruz Mayor Cynthia Mathews will talk about the grassroots movement to save local history. Gil Sanchez and Daryl Allen will give a presentation about restoring the adobe to tell a story. The event also will honor the Park Founders.

The program begins at 6:30 p.m. Please dress in layers, as it may be cold. Santa Cruz Mission sweatshirts also will be on sale in the Mission ParkStore during the event. The discount is 10 percent for the public and 20 percent for Friends' members. Become a member! 
Enjoy a picnic, history talk at Castro Adobe State Historic Park
Visit Castro Adobe State Historic Park on Saturday for a history talk and chance to picnic at our newest State Park. The Castro will be open for "Picnic in the Park: Unexpected Connections" from 12-1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19. Bring a lunch and enjoy the talk. 

Admission is free. The park is at 184 Old Adobe Road in Watsonville. Parking is limited; please carpool.

Save the date: ParkStore Holiday Sale is the first weekend of December

Explore Mountain Parks during free interpretive events
Castle Rock State Park and Portola Redwoods State Park each have free interpretive events happening Friday, Nov. 25, and fall is a great time to visit these Santa Cruz Mountains State Parks. 

The events include:  The events are free. Parking is $10 at Portola Redwoods and $8 at Castle Rock, and supports the park. Portola Redwoods is at 9000 Portola State Park Road, La Honda. Castle Rock is at 15000 Skyline Blvd., Los Gatos.

Thanksgiving weekend — Friday, Nov. 25, through Sunday, Nov. 27 — California State Parks is partnering with REI and encouraging people to connect with California’s outdoors. Spend the weekend celebrating family and friends in the outdoors. 

To inspire people out of the stores and into parks, the Invent Your Adventure campaign has partnered with REI to provide the opportunity to win prizes by participating in a three-day social media-based photo contest set locally in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, and across the state at Mount Tamalpais State Park, Cardiff Seaside State Beach, Bolsa Chica State Beach, Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park and Lake Oroville State Recreation Area.
