Although most of us aren’t able to be in the church building, it doesn’t mean that the community is at a standstill! Please be advised that on Sunday, 30 August, we will have a congregational meeting for the sole purpose of electing officers. If you are a member, we urge you to be in attendance that day (via Zoom) so that we have a quorum. We need that to be able to vote. We will conduct this meeting before worship starts so that we may install our four nominees that morning, also. Kathy Cooper and Monica VanderBaan have agreed to accept a second term as elders and Sheryl Mason has agreed to fill in the gap for the class of 2022 as an elder. Matt Harrison has agreed to again serve as a deacon. For the nominating committee, Karen Jorge, Dan Blackford and Uluma Sharpe have all agreed to serve for next year. Mark your calendars now to save that morning to worship with us!
I will plan an officer’s training event for the early fall, too. Whether or not you are new to your office, this will be a time for us (deacons and elders) to reflect on what our calls mean and how we live into those calls. We Presbyterians do like our governing bodies to do things decently and in order!
I’m having a new member’s class on Tuesday, 25 August, at 5:30. I have sent out a packet of material to those who have expressed a desire to be in that class. If you are someone I’ve missed and would like to sit in on this class, please let me know so that I can email you the Zoom link. You are also welcome to join this class if you are merely interested in refreshing your understanding of what it means to be Presbyterian and a member of a church. Just let me know of your desire!
Since there was a great response to the Bible study that has finished, I will be leading another study beginning on Tuesday, 15 September and running through Tuesday, 29 September. This seemed to be a day that worked so we will keep it on that day. We will keep it at the same time, 5:30, unless I hear from a number of working people that 6 PM would be better. Our series this time, by request, will be on “The Women of the Bible.” They are an interesting lot!!
One of the commitments new members are asked to consider is how they will live into their membership. One of the ways to do this is to commit to Bible study, prayer, and worship. As long term members it is good to consider that commitment again. Serving as an officer of the church is one way to act out your commitment. How many of us, though, are willing to give the time to studying scripture? One of our core beliefs as Reformed Christians is about the authority of scripture in our lives. When I hear or read what some people who call themselves Christians are spouting or writing, it’s hard to believe that they’ve actually read the Bible. How will we be able to stand up for our understanding of Christianity if we have not studied scripture? Biblical literacy in our culture is a misnomer - most of this country is Biblically illiterate. I am not trying to be accusatory or pointing the finger at anyone in particular. I am merely asking you to reflect on what your relationship is to scripture and if you are willing to make your understanding of it a pillar of how you live your life. (OK, maybe I am trying to drum up business for Bible studies!)
One of my favorite stories is about the long-time member of a Methodist church. She was a scion of the community and was deeply involved in the life of the church. As she departed the building one day, in conversation with the pastor, she said to him, “Well, as it says in scripture, to your own self be true.” (This is a true story!)
Kathy Cooper will be calling a meeting of the Nurture committee as we consider ways that we can involve our children and youth in ways that are meaningful to them in these unusual circumstances.
One way that I’m hoping to bring more children into our Zoom circle, at least for a moment, is to give a children’s message this Sunday. So, if you are parents with children, please plan to unmute yourselves during this time in the service as I would like to be able to chat with them! We’ll see how this works!!
Peace and grace,

Receiving of offerings continues to be important to sustain our church community. While it is missing from our order of worship, we hope you will continue to give online or with a check mailed to the church (500 Hope Street, Providence, RI 02906) as you are able. Thank you!
We invite you to stay online after worship for virtual coffee hour :)
Transcripts and audio recordings of recent sermons can be found on our website here. Older sermons can be found here. Thank you, Ruth Kirlew, for making these available!
