As with all things Simco, we have 101 names on our list, not 100, and we release it in January and not December, so that we can look back and review the year in its entirety. This list, like so many others, has a lot of the usual characters whose influence is fixed in the firmament of today's art world, but it also includes often overlooked people and entities, i.e. such as Jerry Saltz, who has developed a remarkable following, and the New York Times writers Holland Cotter and Roberta Smith. They see more art than most and are some of the best minds in thinking about art and the business. While my point of view differs from theirs, I have tremendous respect for their commitments and contributions. Trump makes the list because the New York art world will use his presidency as a monolith to push against, and the reactions so far have been fair to absurdly hypocritical. Richard Prince, who made a fortune off of selling art to the investor class, happily jumped on the hate Trump bandwagon with an approach so unethical, it is hard to believe that the art world elites swallowed it so easily. Other new entries include the Hollywood talent agencies that dived into art—WME with their investment in Frieze, UTA with its commitment to exhibition and art management, and ICM and CAA with their decisions to fill their offices with art. Then, there is Pope Francis and the fact that a woman now directs the Vatican Museums.

To be frank, me being one not immune to pettiness, I built this list after having made the ArtReview Power 100 in 2015 as the Flipper/Speculator du jour of the now bygone era, but not in 2016. I feel my contributions and commitments severely misunderstood and overlooked where they count—supporting an army of emerging artists and smaller players, and relentlessly pursuing new collectors and audiences for emerging art. So, in my typical, "if you can't beat them just do your own thing attitude” (or a version of "join ‘em") I decided to make my own list.

I present to you The Simco 101. The names have links on them so you can research those you don't know. Finally, a special note to Rosi Riedl, my partner for over 20 years, in life, love, and business. She is on the list because to me she is the most powerful person in my world.

Have a great 2017.
