2017 National Heart Foundation Calendar - featuring Nordic Walking


Congratulations to Hannes Holly – Head Coach Nordic Walking WA – for having his fabulous photo of Nordic Walkers on a beautiful WA beach selected for the front cover of this years National Heart Foundation calendar – and another photo of Nordic Walkers inside the calendar.

New Year’s Resolutions – the French way…..........
The most common New Year’s Resolution set last year was to lose weight - not a bad thing given that over 60% of Australian adults are overweight or obese.  Using the energy of the New Year is a great opportunity to make important changes for your health – investing in your body and your sense of well-being.  Remember you are much more likely to stick to something that you enjoy. 

In France, pleasure, or "plaisir", is not a dirty word. It’s not considered hedonistic to pursue pleasure. Perhaps a better translation of the word is “enjoyment" or even "delight". Pleasure, in fact, takes the weight of a moral value, because according to the French, pleasure serves as a compass guiding people in their actions.   For many people Nordic Walking ticks all the boxes; it’s fun, purposeful, social, relaxing, energizing, low-impact, and delivers high-results.  It’s cheap and convenient - you can do it anywhere. 
 
Remember - the World Health Organisation guidelines state that to get the massive health benefits of exercise Adults aged 18–64 should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week”

And higher levels of physical activity can achieve bigger reductions in the risk of five common chronic diseases - stroke, breast and bowel cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

CNW FaceBook is an easy way for the growing community of Canberra Nordic Walkers to keep in touch, share information and photos, ask questions, and coordinate Nordic Walks amongst themselves.

Capital Nordic Walking will post regular interesting information on Nordic Walking from around the world and updates on Canberra NW courses and group walks.

We look forward to everyone using the page and helping to create a fun, growing and active Nordic Walking community in Canberra.

2017 Summer and Autumn Free Group Nordic Walk Program
Walk n’ Talk n’ Workout! January through May
A great way to enjoy Nordic Walking is to connect with other Nordic Walkers so that you can socialise and enjoy the exercise and the scenery together whilst honing your technique with a qualified Nordic Walking instructor

Nordic Walkers are invited to enjoy free group Nordic Walks throughout Summer and Autumn on Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday.  These walks are not a race - walk at your own pace and for a distance that is comfortable for you. 

Kristen will aim to be there for most of the walks.  At this stage Kristen will be out of Canberra on the following dates: 17 Jan, 21/22 Jan, 18/19 Feb, and 11/12 March. Even when Kristen is not able to be there, walkers can still get together and enjoy a Nordic Walk together.
Saturday mornings: 8.30am
Lake Burley Griffin
Starting Saturday 14th January

Type: Circuit / loop
Distance: Approximately 5 kms
Estimated Time: 1 hour
Difficulty Level: Easy

Description: Flat walk on wide sealed pathway shared with cyclists, some shaded areas, drink fountains, toilets, coffee shops

Starting location: Corner Parkes P/W & Queen Elizabeth Terrace: Google Map Link

Note: For those keen for a longer walk Kristen is happy to join you for 2 laps of the lake
Sunday early evening: 4.30pm
Little Black Mountain Circuit
Starting Sunday 29th January

Type: Circuit / loop
Distance: Approximately 4.5 kms
Estimated Time: 1 hour
Difficulty Level: Moderate to hard
Description: Beautiful bush walk on quiet, wide gravel fire trails. Some moderately steep ascents and descents. Some uneven loose gravel surfaces with ridges from water run-off.  Great opportunity to practice walking on gravel trails and honing up and downhill NW technique.

Tuesday morning Wellness Walks: 8.30am
Lake Burley Griffin  -  Starting Tuesday 24th January
Weekly Wellness Nordic Walks are designed for walkers who have medical or health conditions, joint problems, are masters/senior walkers, or are returning to exercise after injury or being inactive – or Nordic Walkers who just want to travel at a slower pace and focus on their technique.

We walk at a moderate pace that is comfortable for everyone - for around 30 - 45 mins - depending on how the group feels. There is the possibility of coffee or a cool drink afterwards for those interested.
