Michigan Sugar Maple and Pollution

A new University of Michigan-led study concluded that human-derived nitrogen pollution has a fertilizing effect promoting growths in Michigan’s sugar maple trees. However, the study concluded that Michiganders should expect decreased growth of sugar maples across the state due to warmer and drier weather conditions caused by global warming.

Water Levels

New Great Lakes Water Levels Report Released

A newly released report will help decision makers address the challenges and opportunities posed by Great Lakes water level variability. With a focus on Lakes Michigan and Huron, the report synthesizes the findings of multidisciplinary research teams who worked with local communities to identify practical, adaptive strategies to address issues facing shoreline property owners and managers. Public comments on the report are being solicited through March 3, 2018.

2018 Dow Masters Fellows Announced

This year, 34 masters and professional-degree students from 10 U-M schools and colleges were named Dow Sustainability Fellows. Each new Fellow will receive $20,000 for their studies and become part of a diverse and collaborative community. Each Masters/Professional Fellow will complete an interdisciplinary team project focused on developing collaborative and practical sustainability solutions in the real world.

May Mobility

May Mobility Autonomous Car Startup

A U-M startup, May Mobility, has tested its bright green and white driverless shuttles on the public streets of downtown Detroit. May Mobility has already received $11.6 million in funding from private donors as well as local and Silicon Valley venture capital funds such as Maven, Tandem Capital and Trucks Venture Capital. The team plans to make their autonomous vehicles affordable and accessible for the average consumer.
