Organic Fertilizer

Campus Efforts towards Sustainability Progress

Sustainability efforts by the University of Michigan in 2017 resulted in significant progress toward the university's 2025 campus sustainability goals. Progress includes reducing chemical fertilizers usage by 43 percent as well as increasing sustainable food purchases and vehicle carbon output per passenger trips by 30 percent.

M-Air Drone

New Autonomous Aerial Vehicle Outdoor Lab at U-M

M-Air is a new outdoor fly lab for testing autonomous aerial vehicles at the University of Michigan College of Engineering. Researchers say that smaller drones could gather environmental and atmospheric data as well as scout disaster sites, inspect infrastructure like bridges and wind turbines, and perform other jobs that are dangerous for humans.

“I’ve come to the realization that we can’t just snap our fingers and make everything sustainable. It’s a slow process,” says Gregory Cogut, a junior in the Program in the Environment (PitE) with a focus on sustainable development and minors in business and environmental geology. He recycles, composts and uses alternative products. He is also interested in a career based in sustainable business and is currently one of the zero waste coordinators on the Student Sustainability Initiative (SSI) board.
