News from around the Network
Everybody can engage with  Sanctuary in Parliament
November is the month for Sanctuary in Parliament and we are looking forward to 12 November. Bookings are now closed for Sanctuary in Parliament but everybody can still engage their MP with our key policy asks and we are encouraging all groups and partners to support this strategic moment. Successful Regional gatherings
People from across 4 different regions came together to learn and explore how we can further the movement by sharing good practice and  inspirational stories. Read more about the inspirational day in each region below:
Stories of Sanctuary Music Project

Sam Slatcher brought together new songs created over the summer in workshops with Syrian refugees, through a fusion of traditional Syrian and North East-inspired music. Read more about this fabulous storytelling project here.

The album is out 9th Nov, with £5 for every CD going to City of Sanctuary’s Arts Stream. Details here
Congratulations to everyone involved at Psychedelight on becoming a Theatre Company of Sanctuary!
Congratulations to staff and volunteers involved at Global Social Club, Brighton for creating a supportive space for young Sanctuary seekers and becoming a Youth Club of Sanctuary!
 Schools of Sanctuary 

Schools of Sanctuary practitioners from around the network met in Birmingham last month to discuss a nationally strategic way forward for the schools of Sanctuary award.
Please contact if you want to contribute to this work, including updating the resource pack and setting minimum criteria for the award.

In the meantime, here are some great examples to inspire you from  Schools of Sanctuary in Swindon and Wiltshire.
 Mumbles Welcome – More than a day out!
People seeking sanctuary from Swansea  had the chance to sample some local culture on a day trip to Mumbles.   Read more about this lovely day of welcome here. Sanctuary breaks activities around the network are really taking off. 

Campaigns and Actions
Lift the Ban 
The petition has been signed by more then 10,000 people and counting. There have  been encouraging messages from the Immigration Minister and Hackney MP, Diane Abbott announcing Labour's commitment to Lift The Ban.  We are proud to be part of the coalition please continue to share the petition . You can get your Lift the Ban activism pack here.  This is one of our policy asks in this year's Sanctuary in Parliament. 
Unlocking Detention 2018 

As members of the coalition Detention Forum, City of Sanctuary is encouraging its network of groups and streams to join in the Unlocking Detention 2018 campaign to raise awareness about our government’s  inhumane immigration detention policies and in support of our Sanctuary in Parliament policy ask for an end to indefinite detention. Events, Resources and Opportunities
Ben & Jerry Film Night
Organise a film night and take advantage of Ben's & Jerry's package of a free download of the film 8 Borders 8 Days and ice cream.  It's open to individuals and groups to organise and encourage as many people to sign the Lift the Ban petition (offline petition).  Please email for more information.
Rebuild your Career
The Refugee Journalism Project  are offering training  for individuals who are interested in taking part in their initiative to support journalists who seek to rebuild their professional careers in the UK. Details and application process available here
Welcoming Refugee Children into Your School 
Here is a link to a fabulous new resource from the National Education Union which provides practical suggestions for teachers to create refugee friendly classrooms.  It includes help and support, ideas for induction and utilising the skills of other children. There are also sections on creating a climate in which refugee children feel welcomed and valued, how to make the curriculum accessible and classroom organisation. Please share with Schools of Sanctuary.
Help to organise Refugee Week in your town or city...
 Refugee Week UK Coordinator Counterpoints Arts is offering local Refugee Week networks the opportunity to benefit from free support!  They can give support in:
  • Developing a media and social media strategy
  • Fundraising
  • Building new Refugee Week networks
  • Other areas where support is needed (as identified by networks themselves)

South West and Wales regional gathering will be in Cardiff on the 28th of November 2018. More details available here.
