Welcome to our February newsletter aiming to update, share opportunities and ideas for action that you can take which will make a difference. We hope this cheers you as we move out of the darkness of winter and lockdown to a more hopeful Spring. Link to Learn is City of Sanctuary UK’s new online home learning support project which includes a weekly Homework Club and the Storybook Sessions developed in partnership with Pilot Theatre. Read all about it here
Greenwich Sanctuary Motion 


We are delighted to hear that Greenwich Council have joined the  growing number of Local Authorities who are prioritising their commitment to being a City (or town/Borough) of Sanctuary. Please read their motion here.

Congratulations!
  •  To staff and students at Stacey Primary in Cardiff on becoming a School of Sanctuary for their welcoming commitment to welcome and inclusion.

  • To Mount Sion CBS Secondary School, Waterford and Bunscoil Loreto, Gorey, in Ireland on becoming a School of Sanctuary,  and to our sister organisation Places of Sanctuary Ireland for all their work with schools and all their other amazing work!

  • To the University of Essex who have been awarded the title of University of Sanctuary, in recognition of its efforts to welcome and support people seeking sanctuary.

The Asylum Matters website has more campaigns to follow and support. These include asylum support, accommodation, and the right to work. Their news page provides weekly updates on the refugee sector current advocacy initiatives which are very informative. 
Events, Resources and Opportunities
 
Celebrating Sanctuary! 
 
 We invite network groups to join us in planning local or regional online events for a Celebrating Sanctuary week  in April to promote  a positive narrative to policy makers, celebrating our vision of welcome and for a fair, safe and effective  asylum system. More information. 
Connect & Create is back!

Following our successful online activities programme last year we are once again bringing creativity, fun and friendship into a safe online space for all ages and abilities, for people seeking sanctuary, for volunteers and for others who are struggling with the loneliness and boredom of lockdown. Check out and share our regularly updated programme here
Facilitated Conversations 
Our series of Facilitated Conversations, which bring together members of the network to share practice, challenges and find solutions on specific topics, continues. Click on the graphic below to register for the next one on Social Media. Other upcoming dates for your diary include Media Basics Training on 9th March and Media Interviews on 18th March, both at 10.30am.  Keep your eye on our Latest Events page.   
 Training Resources 

The Sanctuary Awards learning opportunity last month was attended by 39 people from across the network. Please read all about it here where you can see the PPT slides and video recording.  

Other Facilitated Conversations resources remain pertinent as we stay in lockdown.  Check the 
Past Events for these including Befriending, Using Arts and Sports to support mental wellbeing, Resettlement, Teaching ESOL online, Drop-ins online etc.

              Migration Surveillance Guide                   

 Privacy International has released a report on how UK authorities track and monitor immigrants and the companies which profit.  You can register for an event on 10th Feb at 5pm here which summarises the report and to discuss research and advocacy ideas.
'Response'-  Hope not Hate Project

First Briefing from Hope not Hate Response Project covering the recent far-right activity around channel crossings and temporary accommodation.
Covid-19 Vaccination Advocacy 
 
The new Covid-19 Vaccination Advocacy Project was launched by Doctors of the World  to ensure that everyone in the UK has access to the vaccine, regardless of immigration status. Read more about it here
