Welcome to our April newsletter!  Remember, we are in this for the long haul so we hope you are taking time off this Easter weekend and enjoy the springtime.   This month we continue to bring you events, some good news, resources and opportunities including  jobs, one which is with us!  Please help us to find the right candidate by widely promoting it.

News from around the Network
 Welcoming Nations 

Ahead of the Senedd elections, the Welsh Refugee Coalition is asking political parties to commit to making the vision of sanctuary a reality in its manifesto. Similarly, ahead of the Scottish Parliament elections, the Scottish Refugee Council has secured the signature of the four leaders of the political parties to their Welcome Pledge. 
Banners Celebrate City of Welcome

Over 100 participants from across Swansea created a colourful pair of banners - one in English and the other in Welsh to commemorate cultural diversity celebrating their ten year anniversary as a City of Sanctuary. Congratulations Nawal!
Please join us in congratulating Nawal our Website and Database Officer and wishing her well in her new post with a global IT company. We are delighted with her success but will miss her friendship and technical support enormously. Nawal has supported groups across the network with website and emails for several years. She joined City of Sanctuary UK in 2013 as a volunteer when she was seeking sanctuary and leaves us at the end of April. Please send your farewell messages to and contact with website or email queries until we recruit a replacement
Norwich Arts Stream raises £10,000

76 donated original pieces of art work raised a whopping £10k for New Routes Integration, English+, Norwich International Youth Project and The Bridge Plus in a mesmerising online  Arts Auction. The charites will each use their  share of the funds raised to run a variety of activities with people seeking sanctuary. 

To St. Francis' Catholic Primary School, Birmingham and Oasis Academies, Bristol on becoming School of Sanctuary, in recognition of their efforts to welcome and support people seeking sanctuary.  Please tell us about your awards work.

Our Response to the new Immigration Plans 

Please read our Together we will Stand up for Sanctuary article where we link you to the new Immigration plan proposed by the Government and discuss the City of Sanctuary UK and sector wide response. We will not be distracted by these appalling and unworkable plans and will continue to build a movement together with groups, supporters, individuals involved in streams, awards and welcoming work, the Local Authority network and our partners to bring about the change we want to see - a humane and credible asylum system.

The Asylum Matters website will soon be posting some guidelines to the new Immigration plans consultation. Their news page provides weekly updates on the refugee sector current advocacy initiatives which are very informative.

  • Schools of Sanctuary and supporters  working with families will be interested in the upcoming "Researching the experiences of refugee children and families" event on April 14th.  
  • Colleges of Sanctuary launch Event held by The College Development Network on May 17th aimed at public sector education staff.  Information and registration. 
Right to Work - Animation and campaign report
More than a 130 supporters met to speak up for the right to work for people seeking asylum on Tuesday 16th of March in the Glasgow Right to Work Campaign Gathering. Read all about here
